I had one of those moments your heart stops as a mom.
I've finally have calmed down and caught my breath. I had my first real scary moment as a mom tonight. I had given both girls baths and I was putting clothes away in their closets. I put my 7 month old in the crib. I heard her whining and I kept popping in and out of the closet saying peekaboo to her. Than she started screaming. She fell in between the mattress and the crib side. Only her head and one arm were above the mattress and the rest of her body was below the metal bars that hold the mattress. I ran over to her and she was hysterical and I yanked her out. All I kept thinking about is what if this happened at night. What if I heard her cry over night and thought oh let me just give her a minute to see if she calms down. I am so upset over this.
This crib was purchased in 2010 from JCP. My older dd was in it for over 2 years and I never had any problems. I called JCP and they said there is no recall for this item but they are taking it back and said they wrote down my complaint. I measured the mattress and its the exact measurement the crib states it requires. I just cannot believe how something I thought was so safe was so unsafe. Moms make sure nothing can fit between the side of your crib and your mattress. I never thought my dd could fit through there. The space is small but I guess with kids you just never know.

how scary! how old/big is your LO? I do the 2 finger test between the crib and mattress, it definiely fits more than 2 fingers. It always made me nervous!

She is 7 months old. I never heard of that two finger test but you could fit more than 2 fingers. I will try it on any new crib I buy. I mean the space isn't visible to the eye but when my dd was between the mattress and the side of the crib she fit but the crib bars like pushed forward too. This crib wasn't a cheap crib its was over 500 and I am so worried about getting another crib now. JCP says all their cribs pass the safety standards and this crib has no known issues. I am just so upset that the crib we have could have potential seriously injured or even killed my baby. I can't wait to send it back.

I would file a complaint with the CPSC online and they will come to your house and examine the crib. So glad she is okay!

I actually returned the mattress I got for DD#2 from Behrs bc when I put the mattress in the crib there were gaps that I didn't feel were safe. They said it was the correct size mattress but when I got a new one from BBB it fit tight withless than 1 finger space and no place to move. I am not a fan of 2 fingers imho the mattress should be snug bc 2 fingers around if the mattress shifts could be a big gap on one side.

What type of mattress did you end up getting?

Yikes how scary and Thank God it happened when you were there to help! IMO this is unacceptable!!!! This could never happen with our crib/mattress the fit is SO snug! That is the way it should be! This is insane!

And I always had this fear.. something.. dont know what but SOMETHING. Its one of the main reasons I couldn't CIO. I HAD to be there and I had to know.
