Spinoff to FTWM Schedule
For those that work in the city or do not get home until 6:30-7 each night, what do you do about dinner?
Do you cook at that time for the family? Do you give LO something quick so they eat on the earlier side and then prepare something for you and DH while LO is eating?
I currently get home by 5:30, so cooking isn't usually an issue and we eat by 6:30-7 (the latest) but I may be switching jobs which will get me home closer to 7pm.

Re: Spinoff to FTWM Schedule
nights i pick up DS i am home around 6...otherwise it closer to 7. we give him a fruit / veggie packet at daycare around 5ish - it holds him over to dinner. I mostly use my slowcooker so its ready when i come home, or its leftovers to just heat up, or something fast (20 min or less) like tacos, ravioli, breakfast food etc. we try to eat together.

Re: Spinoff to FTWM Schedule
On the days that I go into the city I get home bewteen 7 and 7:30. Those days DH will feed DS dinner and get him ready for bed. DS will usually eat soemthing easy like pasta or leftovers. DS goes to bed around 7 so sometimes I see him and sometimes I don't. When I get home I either sit with DS for a few minutes, then put him to bed and then start to cook dinner or if he is sleeping I start cooking right away. I make something that takes no more than 20-30 minutes and we are usually done with dinner by 8-8:15.

I get home between 7 and 8. We buy a lot of prepared food, frozen food, and very basic things to cook. DH gets home before me so he makes dinner, or he calls something in. DD usually eats around 5 with the nanny, then picks at what we are eating.

Re: Spinoff to FTWM Schedule
Yes I cook for myself, dh and ds when I get home at 6:30 just about every night. Although if something is going on the grill...that's DH's turf lol. I tend to make easy things for dinner during the week. Baked chicken cutlets, baked pork chops, turkey burgers, or something quick to throw on the grill. For my family, things that cook easily and quickly is the way to go. Also I like to make extra of certain meals to have leftovers the next night. Like I said on the other thread....if I make a London Broil I'll make a really big piece of meat and use the leftovers to throw over a salad the next night. I'll do the same with extra chicken...throw it over a salad with some feta cheese and olives...and it makes a nice greek salad. We also do breakfast for dinner sometimes.....an omlette with veggies & cheese and whole wheat toast. Simple and easy. Certain smaller supermarkets (ie John's Farms, Fairway, East Islip Village Market) sell things like stuffed pork chops or chicken cordon bleu. Its uncooked of course but all you have to do is stick it in the oven. That's super easy and delicious too! My DS is 2 and he eats when we eat. Sometimes if Dh is getting home later than usual I will feed DS sooner. But 99% of the time he eats with us even if we eat at 7:30 or 8

Re: Spinoff to FTWM Schedule
I get home @ 6:30
Now that Sean is older he CAN wait to eat dinner, but Colin is famished and cranky so I usually feed them by 7:00
I have a house full of picky eaters, DH included, so for as much as I hate it, and I KNOW it's not the best thing to do, I end up cooking 3 meals - the kids, DH and myself (if I even eat) b/c if I ate what DH eats I'd be a house .......

DH is home a few days a week so he'll cook on those days. If we are both coming home from work, we will either do crockpot, prep something the night before or take out (and due to my lack of planning - more often than not it's take out).
For the boys - DS 1 is super picky and never eats what we eat so I make him something quick (usually nuggets which are his fave or cheese, crackers and fruit which he is seeming to ask for more and is even easier). DS 2 still eats some baby food so I will feed him oatmeal and a fruit/veggie and give him some finger foods while I clean up.

I thank god everyday that my DH is a simple guy. He is more than happy to have a PB & J for dinner.
But I will make chicken, veggies, rice or potatoes. Mexican - tacos, taco casserole. Chili Burgers I sometimes do crock pot but I hate to leave it on when I am not home.
We also grill all year round so anything on that.
DS eats what we eat 90% of the time.

Re: Spinoff to FTWM Schedule
Right now DS is only on formula so one of us cooks dinner while the other feeds DS / puts him to bed between 7:30-8.
When he starts eating solids I think we'll have to have the nanny feed him "dinner" since DH gets home around 6 and I don't get home until 6:30/7. I'm not sure if that's too late for him to eat regular food before going to bed, though i'd like to be the one to feed him...

I feed DS at 7ish and he goes to bed between 830-9. He has no issues with it.

Re: Spinoff to FTWM Schedule
I'm no longer in NYC to Long Island but there are still times I'm home by 7pm or even 8pm instead of 6.
She can not wait. Just ain't gonna happen. So she 'snacks' on fruits and veggies until I get home or while he makes dinner. We eat around 8ish or 9ish.
She'll eat again with us at the table. Chicken Nuggets, pasta, chicken and always with veggies on the side... LOL
This is why I love having a night owl. There's always AJ time. I got home from work last night pretty late.. around 10pm and she was up. Stayed up a half hour so we could work on her school project then finally went to bed. Most nights I get back from my PT job around 9:30 and she's either 'just' gone to bed or stays up so I can tuck her in. The nights I dont do that part time job she's still up until at least 9pm.

Re: Spinoff to FTWM Schedule
The earliest I get home is 6:30. If I'm not home by then it means DH is home that day and he'll take care of dinner.
But when I get home at 6:30 he gets home at 7:15 at the earliest. Usually one of 3 things happens:
1) I pre-prepared a meal that morning that I can then throw in the oven
2) I have something ready to cook for DD and DH and I will just eat salad
3) Main dish was prepared on the weekend and I will make a quick veggie side.
We prepare a lot on the weekends, and we also both take lunch to work. So generally we are eating a "dinner" type entree (chicken or steak) for lunch, so salad is fine for us for dinner.
ETA DD eats between 645 and 7. We eat whenever it works out. It's kind of a shit show but i'm trying to get more organized.
