How many ounces of fluid should a toddler drink?
My DD is 16 months old,and her doctor said she should be drinking about 16 ounces of milk per day, and no more than 24 ounces. DD LOVES milk (soy milk...can't have cow's milk), and that's all she wants to drink. She'll drink MAYBE 2 ounces of water a day, no matter what kind of cup/bottle I put it in. And she hates juice...I've tried every juice under the sun with her. So my question is, Is 16-24 ounces of fluid enough in a day? I'd ask the doctor but I feel like I call every day with a silly question, so I want to get some opinions first. TIA!

To be honest, I never sweated how much DD was drinking at that age. Once we took away her bottles her milk consumption dropped considerably but at that time she was also eating three square meals a day too. She tended to drink milk mostly with meals, occasionally she would have a sippy of milk throughout the day but not always. She drank a lot of water too. My ped was never too concerned with the actual amount she drank a that point, as long she was drinking something that was fine with him. Some days were more, some were less. It just depended on her mood.

How many ounces of fluid should a toddler drink?
I have twin boys & one of them also LOVES MILK. He actually drinks too much & trying to cut it down. I am now realizing that he is not eating enough food during the day & drinking milk to compensate. Is it the same for your child??

My son is 3 and the dr said no more then 16 oz of milk a day. But that was when he was eating yogurt. He doesn't eat any dairy now so I have been giving him an extra cup of milk some days. This time of the year, I don't push the fluids. Unless he is sick. It is the warmer days that I push fluids. No more then 6 oz of juice a day. I water it almost completely down though. 2 oz of juice to 4-6 oz of water. 2-3 cups a day.. Drinking to much milk can cause issues with the little ones..

No, she eats pretty well (for now!).
Thanks for the replies...I feel better about it now. I just wish she didn't cry for more milk when she's done with hers. I feel bad and like I'm depriving her, even though there's always water and watered-down juice within her reach.

No, she eats pretty well (for now!).
Thanks for the replies...I feel better about it now. I just wish she didn't cry for more milk when she's done with hers. I feel bad and like I'm depriving her, even though there's always water and watered-down juice within her reach.
If she's a healthy height and weight I would just let her have some extra milk. What's the harm really? I am pretty laid back with these types of things though.

This is what my pedi told me...
Too much milk is often the cause of iron deficiency anemia in toddlers. While milk is a great source of many nutrients, too much milk can make it harder for your child's body to absorb iron. The iron deficiency is often made worse by the fact that toddlers who drink too much milk often don't eat as much, so they may not be getting enough iron in their diets anyway.

Is she still drinking milk in bottles? She might be crying for the bottle more than she's crying for the milk.
DD drank a CRAZY amount of milk until we switched to sippies at 15 months - now it's about 16 or 20 oz. a day, and maybe 5-10 oz. of water, plus more food than she's ever eaten.

Yeah, my ped said the same thing, which is why most of the time I don't give her more milk when she cries for it. And she'll cry for it whether it's a sippy of milk or bottle...doesn't make a difference. Thanks again for the replies
