Preschool and bathroom question

How do you feel about your 3 1/2 yo leaving the classroom, walking down a short hallway to use the bathroom on their own? Do you feel like they should still be escorted and supervised?

Preschool and bathroom question

Definitely. My 4 yr old DD has a bathroom in the classroom so she can go by herself. If it was in the hallway I would definitely want someone taking her.

DD has a bathroom in her classroom so she goes herself but if it was down the hall, I wouldn't want her to go by herself

That's not ok in my opinion. My DS is 3.5 and his teachers always walk the kids to the bathroom even though its just a very short way down the hall.

Re: Preschool and bathroom question

It depends on the school, i think. We had my older DD in a much bigger pre- school where the bathrooms were in the classroom and they did have some in the hallways, but if the kids went out of the classroom they were always escorted by the teachers or assistant.

My younger DD is now in a much smaller pre school where there is only 2 classrooms of which both have windows looking into the hallway where the bathroom is located.
If the child needs help or an escort they bring them, but other than that they can just use the bathroom on their own. i don't see an issue with them going without an escort because the bathroom is not too far outside of the classroom and the area with the classrooms is blocked off from the office and waiting area for the parents or others. They have 2 locked doors you have to go through before you can get into the hallway or classrooms.

This to the T.
AJ is 4 and the bathroom is in her room. If she had to EVER leave the room then she had better have an escort regardless of the reason. JMHO.

Re: Preschool and bathroom question

The problem with escorting them is that you run into ratio issues with the children back in the classroom. If the class is large enough that you require 2 adults, for example, 1 can't just leave every time a child has to pee. The classroom would not meet the child:teacher ratio.

I don't necessarily agree with this, but when the state comes to visit, they only care about the math.

My nephew is 3.5 and I couldn't imagine him walking to the bathroom himself. I used to work at camps with nursery school aged children and we always brought them to the bathroom.

I would not be ok with that at all.

DS is not potty trained yet (He turned 2 in Sept), but there is a bathroom in his classroom when the time comes.

Re: Preschool and bathroom question

Not okay with that. I understand the ratio concern, but then there should be a bathroom in the classroom.

Re: Preschool and bathroom question

If they are leaving the classroom, then there should be a teacher going with them... Way too young to be on their own...
