Can Empathy be taught?
I dont know where to post this but seen as its more to do with my kids than me I thought this might be the best shot.
DH's parents basically abandoned him and his sisters when he was a toddler. HIs grandparents raised him. He has a LOT of issues since then - he does not recognize this unless I bring it up and seems content to go through life being "as good" as he is.
The problem is we now have two kids and its really affecting the way he parents them. He loves our kids and tells them he loves them but he doesn't show his love in ways I do ie. by talking to them, asking how their day was and actually waiting for and caring about the answer, snuggling with them, reading them stories, tucking them in, kissing them hello and goodbye etcetc...there are a 1000 ways we differ and while I don't want him to be the same as me I feel like our kids are suffering because he doesn't know any better.
I know I am not really explaining the full picture but I am wondering if anyone here has any recommendations that I could present to DH - some type of counseling? book to read - even one that I could read and give him some pointers. I know he has not asked for help but I think if I had the right tools / words to use when discussing it with him he might listen. I dont want to make it a huge issue but I also dont want my kids to resent her dad and grow away from him when maybe there was something I could have done along the way.
Sorry for rambling and thanks
