Has anyone ever gone to see the Northern lights? If so, where and when did you go? Did you actually see them? Any other info about planning this kind of trip. DH and I would both love to do this, and are thinking of planning a trip to Alaska, but it seems like such a gamble that you will actually see the lights and its such a big trip (no matter where you go to see them).

TIA!

I went to Reykjavik with my girlfriends about 8 years ago for a long weekend specifically to see the Northern Lights. It was indescribably beautiful.

I believe the best viewing times are December-April (we went in early March). Believei t or not, Iceland was a lot cheaper than Alaska and it was an easy flight. We made a long weekend out of it.

I highly recommend it.

I have heard that the winter-ish months are the best time to go and we were thinking about March. Do you know if the lights are there pretty much every night in "season" or is it a more hit-or-miss kind of thing? I would hate to go and then not see them. did you go on some kind of tour or did you do the trip yourself? thanks for any info!

They have some pretty amazing Iceland cruises. I was just looking into them for my friend's honeymoon. I think that would be a great way to see them. You can also see them on cruises to Alaska.

I've done an Alaskan cruise (AMAZING) - but during the summer and we did not see the lights. Would like to do aland tour of Alaska if we decide to go.

It really depends on weather conditions. Obviously you need clear skies and if I remember correctly the lights were best seen around midnight. We did the trip ourselves. We booked a package through Icelandair. I know that they offer northern lights tours on the website.

I don't know about Alaska but Iceland was a great trip. We went on a glacier tour, went to a natural hot springs, went to an ice bar and saw the city and northern lights. Plus, it only takes about 5 hours to get there.

Me too!

But then I read the book Run by Blake Crouch and now I'm scared.

(just kidding, it was a fictional book)

A friend of mine is doing this in February in Finland, and staying in a glass igloo. I'm so jealous, definitely want to do this some day!

My cousin did this 2 years ago and started in Iceland and finished in Bergen, Norway. Norway is VERY expensive! I will ask her today
