Question about Contractions

Ok this might be a dumb question but I have no idea what contractions feel like. I'm at 39 weeks and I'm feeling period like cramping... I was googling contractions and I read that it can feel like period like cramping... should I start timing it?

This is my first pregnancy and I'm so confused!

Question about Contractions

When my water broke I felt very crampy but it was consistent not really cominng and going. Once the contractions started it did feel like bad period cramps. There was a definite beginning and ending to them at that point. I would time them and see if you see a pattern. Good luck!

Re: Question about Contractions

yes, thats what they feel like....they can still be braxton hicks tho. You may want to time them to be safe but you can have contractions for weeks without going into active labor. If you change positions while you're having contractions and the pain doesnt go away, it's a real contraction. If it stops with a change in position, it's braxton hicks.

HTH!

Re: Question about Contractions

HAHA - I asked the same exact question to my doctor yesterday. I have been having what I thought were maybe contractions but only at night (and they were super short) so I wasn't sure if that's what they were. I also had period-like cramping and I think that's a pre-cursor to contractions!

Then after my internal yesterday I started getting them for sure (about 5-6 per hour). They can be different for everyone but mine were like a general tightening of the whole uterus area in addition to a stronger cramp-like feeling. They came in waves and stopped me from what I was doing. The baby moved at the same time too.

My doc said when I can't "talk through" a contraction and they are about 5 mins apart, 1 min long for an hour is when I should call and see if I should head to the hospital.

Everyone says "You'll know".....I guess that's true. Chat Icon

Question about Contractions

Yes, you will definitely know when you get them. The day I went to the hospital, they were very much timetable (even at 10 mins apart) and the pain for me was so strong that I just had to close my eyes, sit perfectly still, and wait for it to come down. The last thing I wanted to do was to see if i could talk through them! LOL. You're prob getting pretty close! I got bad cramping at night for 2 days prior as well.

Not necessarily true lol. When I thought I was in labor with DD, I called my mom to verify!

Sounds like you're contracting. If the contractions get longer, stronger, and closer together, it's labor. If they're kind of random or the same in intensity over time, it's BH.

Re: Question about Contractions

Mine definitely felt like intense period cramps when my labor started. I would start timing them to see how frequent and how long they last. Good luck!

When my contractions started they were mainly down low. As I progressed, they were low and in my back as well.

Re: Question about Contractions

I think they can vary. I've had steady non painful tightening. And I've had constant tightening with belly ache cramps. I think it was constant since they were so close together. So by the time one was ending another was pretty much starting. AF cramps can be real contractions too.

I've had tightening under by belly button and sometimes only in my upper belly. When I had pain it was all over.
