Flu shot and Whooping Cough shot
Hello ladies, My OB suggested that I get these vaccines. I have never had the flu in my life and never got the flu shot. I was thinking of not getting this but getting the whooping cough one. What is everyones thoughts on this or experience?
Thanks

Flu shot and Whooping Cough shot
I got my booster tetanus shot in December 2009 and apparently it was bundled with the pertussis shot. I only found out because I went to my GP last week to get my flu shot and the pertussis (whooping cough) shot and they went to check since I mentioned having my tetanus booster just a few years ago.
As far as the flu shot goes, if you get it, the baby is also protected by it for a little while after birth. The flu can be deadly while pregnant, both to you and the child. It's up to you whether you want to get the shot or not. As someone who has had the flu so bad I was almost hospitalized for it once in my life, I wanted to take every precaution possible. It's a very personal decision and you have to do what feels right to you.

Flu shot and Whooping Cough shot
Personally I am not getting the flu shot. I had it in the past, and the few times I have I did not have a good reaction to it. My Dr and I discussed it after I had DS, and she agreed the risks outweighed the benefits it could possibly have. Just because you get it doesn't mean you will not get the flu. It protects against the strains they think are going to be prevalent that year.
As far as the ptersussis vaccine, I wasn't offered nor was it discussed when i was pg with ds. I dont think it was a big as it is now (and DS is only 2) I will be discussing it when I go to my appointment on Wednesday though.

Flu shot and Whooping Cough shot
I'm getting the flu shot in mid October, my dr said it might not last the whole season if I get it earlier, and then I'm getting the whooping cough shot in the hospital when they offer it. DH is also get both shots as well.

Re: Flu shot and Whooping Cough shot
I toolk the flu shot with DS, glad I did. I plan on taking it again. At that time, whooping cough was not an epidemic, if it is this year I'll be taking any and all vaccines my dr. recommends.
These illnesses can kill both fetus and mom...why wouldn't you take them? There is NO link between autism and any of these vaccines. I can't imagine why anyone would put their developing baby and themselves at risk.....I would definitely do whatever he dr. tells you.

Re: Flu shot and Whooping Cough shot
I get the flu shot every year because I had your mentality that I never had the flu so why do I need the flu shot. One year I got the flu and vowed to never miss out on a flu shot again. It's completely your decision but for me I'd rather not risk getting the flu now more than ever since I'll have a newborn in the house during flu season.

Re: Flu shot and Whooping Cough shot
I've never gotten a flu shot, but I am definitely getting one this year. I plan to ask my dr. today about when the best time for me to get it is. I was told I'd be offered the whooping cough booster upon discharge from the hospital, and will get it before I leave.
ETA: Got the flu shot today at my 36 week appt.

Re: Flu shot and Whooping Cough shot
the only other time in my life that I got a flu shot was when i was pregnant with my son in 2009.
I was at the OB today and my OB asked if I had gotten one yet and I said no - he looked at me and sternly said "you SHOULD get a flu vaccine" so I got one today.

Re: Flu shot and Whooping Cough shot
I am planning on getting both vaccines...my OB will give me the flu shot but they don't offer TDap but they do recommend it. I am going to try to go to my primary doctor or the CVS minute clinic in syosset to get the TDap vaccine because, although its offered in the hospital after birth, it takes 2 weeks for the peak effectiveness so I'd prefer to have it before I give birth. DH is also getting it and both sets of grandparents already got theirs (its recommended by the CDC that all adults in close contact with infants receive this vaccine 2 weeks before coming in contant with infants).

Re: Flu shot and Whooping Cough shot
I got the Whopping Cough Shot about 2 years ago, so I should be good on that one - my understanding is you only need it once every 10 years.
For the flu shot - absolutely - I now get it every year.
I was once like you "I never get the Flu" - but then I GOT THE FLU and it was the year swine flu was going around. I felt like absolute death for 5 solid days. I didn't even get up to fix myself lunch or anything. I barely had strength to watch tv. This was not a normal "sick day" type of situation.
I now get the flu shot every year and will require that close friends and family get one that plan to be around my baby the first few weeks.
Our LO is due on 12/31 so I am extra sensitive that it is the height of flu season.
