Feeding almost 1yr. old

My ds will be 1 in a week & a half & is still mainly eating purees. We give him table foods like chicken, pastina, veggies, fruit but he will only eat a little bit & doesn't want anymore so then I give him a puree & he'll eat it all up. He eats shacks like puffs, cheerios, wagon wheels fine. Please tell me that I'm not the only one who has this problem & that I'm not hindering him from eating finger foods.

I think its ok to do what your doing. But I would reserve one meal thats purree free, make it finger food, like pieces of steamed veggies and shredded chicken.

Pasta is great for practicing eating, you can find in all kind of shapes and really challenge their skills, orally as well as fine motor.

I agree I would leave one meal for table foods and slowly transition him. At 1 their main nutrition should be coming from food, so he eventually needs to be on table food. He prob just doesn't like the texture, so maybe just stick with the textures he is OK with and go from there.

Re: Feeding almost 1yr. old

Thanks for the advice! I gave him pancakes & blueberries this morning. He had half a pancake & 4 blueberries. Some puffs too. I feel like that isn't enough. Do you think that's ok?

Re: Feeding almost 1yr. old

Maddie is the same way! I give her cut up steamed veggies, baked fruit, etc, and she will eat a few pieces and then she is DONE! Or she will eat so slowly that it takes 10 minutes to get about 2 calories of food in her belly. Or she will start to pick them up and offer them to me (which is so sweet), but then when I pick one up and offer it to her, she is not interested. I have been supplementing with purees (of all different textures, some with chunks, some smoother, some lumpy)

Meanwhile, she would probably eat 143 Cheerios or puffs if I gave them to her, so she has no problem picking up food and putting it in her mouth.

I just plan to keep offering her the finger foods at each meal and offer her more and more variety, and hopefully one day she will just decide that she likes it. I have tried a finger food only meal and she just doesn't really eat, and wants to bf immediately after. UGH. She never liked purees either until I tried to do 100% table food and then suddenly purees weren't so bad. LOL

ETA: She will be one on Sunday (OMG!)

I'm glad my ds is not the only one! Happy birthday to your dd!
