You can do whatever is best for your child.
My district's cutoff is 12/1. Any child born on or before that date and turing 5 can register for kindergarten. Some families with children born close to that date opt to hold a child back so that they gain an extra year of maturity.

My daughter was born September 2008 and she will start UPK in September. She will be three, almost four. The following year she will start Kindergarten when she is four almost five. The cutoff for my district requires kids to be five by December. I think you should look into your district's policy, but I'm pretty sure it is similar across the island. She should start when she is four. I know it seems young but many students start Kindergarten at four years old.

Since my kids go to school in NYC where the cut off is December 31, my DD (born in 2008) will start kindergarten next year in 2013, and my DS (born in 2010) will start in 2015.
I tried to push my DD up because her birthday is in January and she's already been through pre-k but they wouldn't go for it.

The cutoff in NY is usually Dec. so she would be allowed to enter. You will have to decide if you think she is ready. The cutoff where I live(NC) is August so if I want my boys to go, I will have to have them evaluated for early entry or wait an extra year. My boys birthday is November 24

It depends on your cut off for your district. I think most of LI is Dec. 31. Which would have her start at 4 then turn 5 durning kindergarten. I really don't think it is a big deal. That is when I started too.
In my district (i'm in NJ), I believe it is end of September. The next town over is October 8th. You can test your child if they close to the cut off to push them up. By us, if they went to a private kindergarten then they have to be 6 by the time they enter 1st grade if they will be going to public.

my b-day is end of November and i started when i was 4, and turned 5. The cut off in most districts is Dec 1st, but since Kind. is not mandatory, you dont have to enroll her, she can start the following year if you choose to "hold her back".

our district cutoff is 12/15. i would never hold back for my dc unless i had severe concerns about ability or maturity.

DD'a bday is October. She will be 4 when she starts kindergarten. My other DD is an April baby and she will be 5 when she starts.
