Did anyone's RE make you have a mammogram?
Only asking bc one of my gf's went for 3 IVF cycles and after 5yrs of TTc felt a lump and it turned out to be breast cancer. They never gave her a mammogram. With my family history Im thinking maybe I should request one but since I'm only 33 don't know if insurance will cover it. Hers they said she had probably had about 10yrs bf it manifested itself, same with my mom and grandmother.

Re: Did anyone's RE make you have a mammogram?
no but its a good idea to get one. an old poster here (friends with IRL) went thru infertility treatments for years (iui's & ivfs) and did wind up getting estrogen driven breast cancer caused by infertility meds. she went thru treatments and is now doing fantastic!
i think it should be a standard procedure if the drs are prescribing high doses of estrogen or if a pt has been on it for a long time.
i don't think its that common but it does happen.

Who felt the lump?[/QUOTE
The lump came out when she was play wrestling with her dh. She thought she bruised her boob but in fact it was a cancerous lump.

If she felt it on her own then she should have made an appt for a mamogram i dont think she should have relied on her RE to send her.

Oh no the minute she felt the lump she went in for a mammogram. She was just told by her oncologist that he wished that RE's would send their patients for mammograms.

thats because oncologists see estrogen driven breast cancer develop bc RE's prescribe high doses of it in fertility treatments.

Yes. My clinic required it. I believe that they require it if you are 40 or over.

Re: Did anyone's RE make you have a mammogram?
This makes me so nervous! Someone please correct me if I'm wrong though ... I asked Dr.B about this and from what I understand, the fertility drugs do not cause breast cancer. However, if you have breast cancer or a predisposition to it, in the short term while your estrogen levels are elevated from treatments, it could cause it to get worse. Experts on this .. is this correct?

Re: Did anyone's RE make you have a mammogram?
Penny- I believe that this is partially correct. There has been no confirmed link between injectibles and cancer. A link has been shown between long-term Clomid use and cancer. Same for Estrace. There has also been a link shown between increased estrogen levels in and of themselves and cancer. ART cycles almost always mean some level of increased estrogen exposure. It's very dangerous to do fertility treatments if you already have cancer...especially if the cancer is estrogen based. You may remember that CCRM discovered Guiliana Rancic's cancer only because a mammogram was a pre-cycle requirement. Unfortunately, they allowed her to undergo treatments before they had the test results. She also chose to continue her cycle when she found out and frozen her embryos. It's all so scary.

It's def scary! We all go into these treatments with one goal in mind and it's easy to lose sight of the fact that if/when we are successful, we want to be around to enjoy it!

It's terrifying especially since its not talked about. Dr Halfen asked if I've ever had a mmogram and tested for the cancer gene which I have done both but like Guiliana rancic my gf had no clue. Don't know if it was bc of the estrogen but I've been watching her fight this disease for a year. Like Guiliana she also froze her eggs for surrogate use.

Re: Did anyone's RE make you have a mammogram?
Columbia makes certain patients have one. It all depends on your age and history,
My sister had one but I did not.

Re: Did anyone's RE make you have a mammogram?
Right before we started TTC I went for one, based on my family history. I was only 30. ECF required me have another one before I started IVF. Fortunately they were both normal. You should definitelty go, your insurance should cover it, especially if you have a family history.

Re: Did anyone's RE make you have a mammogram?
I started TTC at age 37 and my OB at the time suggested I go for one for a baseline. My insurance covered it at the time. I don't know if fertility treatments increase cancer rates or not...i think cancer rates are increasing in general all on their own. I have now had 6 friends who have had BC, most of them were under the age of 40 when found. Actually none of them did any fertility treatments.
However, I am scared about the amounts of excess hormones I have put in my body. I always sadly joke that when I'm done with all this that I'm removing it all. And sometimes I'm not so sure I'm joking.

Re: Did anyone's RE make you have a mammogram?
When my regular OBGYN referred me to my RE the first thing he did was write me a script for a mammogram. He said it was standard, that the RE would want that baseline before they start you on all the meds etc. They did ask at my first appt. if I had had a mammogram at that point and I was able to give them the results.

Re: Did anyone's RE make you have a mammogram?
Yes, my RE would not begin any treatments until I had a pap and mamogram done. After a year, I had to go again. I think it is because of my age though.
