Moms who make their own food.. PLEASE come in!!

Ive benn making DDs baby food since she started on solids at 4.5 months- I started out making batches every other day sbut now at 7 months I am back at work full time and cant do that anymore! I need a more efficient system.. can you share yours?

I was thinking of designating one day a week to make batches of a few different things feeding her that fresh for a day or two and freezing the rest for the rest of the week.. but I dont know how much to make at a time? or how many freezer containers I need. For moms who freeze their food.. how often do you make it? Do you always make it on the same day every week or month etc?

Id love a "system" that I can keep but I feel like I dont know exactly how much she will eat every week.

What do you do?

Re: Moms who make their own food.. PLEASE come in!!

i have a baby bullet which came w a few storage containers, but i decided to make more at once since i'm also a FTWM so i bought a few more containers. each one holds 6 jar-sized cups of food and i now have 5 of them. so i can make quite a bit and freeze or refrigerate it.

since different fruits & veggies make different amounts, i just make one batch of a few different ones. like for example, one sweet potato can fill 8 jars (2 ounce jars, he eats one of those jars at every meal). but one banana will only fill 2-3 jars. after i make each fruit or veggie once i know how much i'll get out of it. then i figure for one week, that's 14 meals i'll need. i like to give a fruit at one meal and a veggie at the other.

so i figure usually 2 veggies will be enough for the week, and 3-4 pieces of fruit. now we've started blending things together so it's gonna get a little more tricky to figure out, but same idea.

I make food every few months, (I think the last time I made food was 6/3) but I also give my girls jared organic food also. I freeze in the little 2.5 oz medela bottles (I had twins in the nicu for 6 weeks and they gave me those bottles to pump into, lots of bottles!)

For example I need to make a fruit soon, we are almost out. I bought 6 or 7 organic pears. I will make all of those pears and freeze all but 1 or 2 containers. I will make apples soon and buy a 5 lb bag and make it all.

I use a lot of bottles to do this! you could even freeze in small zip lock bags.

I would make a bunch of fruit & freeze, then another day a bunch of veggies & freeze, and meat.

Maybe just have one dedicated day to making all the food and freeze. I bought the one step ahead freezer jars, but found ice cube trays and zip lock bags were so much easier.

I never bought a dedicated "food purerer" (sp), I just used a steamer pot and a hand held food processor. I was able to make so much at one time

This.
I found the freezer containers were $$ and not really worth it. You would have to get SO many to be able to make big batches and they take up a ton of room. If you have the square ice cube, ice trays, I think I remember that 2 trays equaled about a jar of food. So I froze them, popped them into ziplocs and took out a few and put them in the take and toss containers. By lunch time they were defrosted.

I would spend a little time on a sunday about twice a month making big batches.

ita with all the pps about making and freezing- I just wanted to add that there are lots of foods you can supplement with if you run out. My list of go to easy foods includes: sweet potatoes (I bake them, and they don't need to be pureed), yogurt, cottage cheese, bananas, and avocados. This way, if the frozen food runs out, I just grab one of these things and we are good to go!
