fever in the middle of night and then its gone

ds is 15 months old. he woke up at 2am crying, when i picked him up he felt warm so i took his temp and it was 101 on his forehead. his normal temp is usually 99 rectally

i gave him motrin at 2 and by 3 his fever broke.

its now 10:30, i took a scanner temp and it was 98, i took a rectal temp and its 99.1

wouldn't the motrin be out of his system by now? its 8 1/2 hrs later and he's acting like his normal self laughing and playing.

could it be a virus that came and went that fast? he was fine yesterday and last night.

my mother said it could've been a growth fever but i didn't think it could go up that high

any ideas? should i keep him inside today?

update: he has a low grade temp - 99.8 so I'm thinking maybe teething or viral?

Fevers are the result of the body fighting something off so it is very possible that it can come and go that fast. My DC had a fever off and on over the weekend for a few hours. Play it by ear as far as how your child feels but since today is so nice, I would not keep him inside if he is happy outside.

This is what always happens to my DD who is now 3 be prepared usually something shows up a day or two later with her. Good Luck
