Re: silly question about twins/triplets

I think there are two possibilities ...

1) The egg splits giving you identical twins

2) In an attempt to increase the odds of a BFP the couple puts back more than 1 and they make it past the transfer stage giving you fraternal twins, triplets, etc.

Re: silly question about twins/triplets

ICSI has nothing to do with multiples at all, it just controls how the egg is fertilized.

in many IVFs 2 embryos are transferred, hence the higher rate of twins. some people put back 3 embryos if the quality is not great, hence triplets.

there is also the random chance that embryos split cause identicals. so for example, if you put back two embryos and they both take and one splits, triplets. even if you transfer one embryo, theres always the chance that it splits to identical twins (or rarer, triplets). there is research that shows that assisted hatching prior to transfer can lead to increased splitting of the embryo, so increased identicals.

similar to the reason IVF fails as much as it works, you can't control what implants after transfer.

This is what happened to me... Although the embryologist told me assisted hatching doesn't increase the chance of splitting, google said differently. We did assisted hatching and ICSI that cycle. I transferred 3, 2implanted and 1 split so I had triplets (which included a set of identical twins). Unfortunately, I lost them due to a SCH at 8wks.

Re: silly question about twins/triplets

Depending on your chances of the IVF "sticking" or "taking", age, diagnosis, etc. the # of embryos transferred can make the multiples.

As the other posters have said, ICSI is for ensured fertilization. My ICSI guys were used as a control group of sorts. Both my groups took.

Based on my age and chances for success, the doctor said we could implant one or two. We just chose to transfer 2, just in case the one didn't take.
