Depends on where you're buying. We lost a house in syosset because someone paid over asking (we offered asking)
I've seen this happen in bayside too, but only if there were multiple bids involved

Have you done a home inspection yet? Sounds like other buyers backed out because of something that was discovered at the inspection. Make sure you are using an independent person, not someone realtor rec. as it seems you might not trust the realtor.

It doesn't sound like you were hosed. In the area I am looking to move to (Westchester), many homes sell at or above listing. There are bidding wars and it can be a nightmare. Alot of times agents put the houses on for less, knowing that there will be bidding wars.
Yup same happened to my gf who bought a home in manhasset. When it is a desirable area, it happens....you purchase the home above asking.
