Another question for BF moms
My supply was low and I've been trying to boost it. It's up now, but I still don't know if it's where it should be. I guess I'd feel better having others to compare with. Thanks!

Re: Another question for BF moms
pump at one time or all together in day? I average about 45oz a day 8-10 oz each time I pump.

Wow! How old are your infants? Is that w/o any supplements like fenugreek?

Re: Another question for BF moms
Don't worry... most women don't pump that much in the beginning. When Alex was 6 weeks old, I could pump in one session about 4-6 ounces. But, with time I was able to increase that amount.... by the time she was 5 months I was pumping about 60 ounces a day.

Re: Another question for BF moms
God bless you Mommies who were able to pump more than 6. I am BF for 7 months now and never have gotten more than ~5 oz at a time. I think it has to do with the fact that my son is not a big eater. He never drinks more than 4 oz at a time... I am trying to get my storage of milk up right now for when I go back to work and it is fustrating, because been only getting 3 oz if I am lucky

My daughter is almost three weeks old. I exclusively pump, so maybe that has something to do with my supply. All I know is I could easily feed a small nation with what comes out of my boobies everyday!

Really! Touche! I cut back my pumping! I was at 65 day!! I have a Q for you ladies... do you guys pump so many oz because you "pumpfeed", and not directly BF, or are those oz in addition to BF?

Re: Another question for BF moms
I definately don't pump as often as I should. I only pump about 3 times a day or 4 if I'm lucky. I usually get 8-13 ounces per session (1/2 of that per side). Luckily it is still more than she eats, so I have still been able to freeze. She is 10 weeks old now; I was getting more when she was younger because I was pumping every 6 hours religiously.

Re: Another question for BF moms
With both girls I could easily get 8 oz out of each breat for the first 8-10 weeks. And I only pumped when I'd become engorged, otherwise I breastfed

I don't really know the answer to that because Ava never latched on, so I never actually BF. I would have to assume, though, that I have this supply because I've exclusively pumped since day one. It would only make sense. I would imagine any baby with the ability to s-uck like a hospital grade pump would have your supply that high, too!

I've been thinking to start storing breastmilk in the freezer, but don't know how to work it. I usually just pump once a day @ 9am, because I wake up engorged, and it flows so easily (it's a chore to me to pump & BF the whole day ).

I was like WOW, they pump 60oz AND BF?
One more Q: do you follow a pump schedule (ie. every 3-4 hours)? Or pump right before DD awakes?

I started out pumping every three hours to get my supply up, then I moved to every four hours. Now I'm onto every five hours. I am trying to stretch it so that I only pump every three hours, but I need to do it slowly so I don't get engorged or clogged milk ducts or anything. So each week, I space it out an hour more. I hope that my supply begins to decrease at some point. I have no more room to store this stuff. I pumped this morning and got an entire day's worth of milk in one pumping session

Re: Another question for BF moms
This thread makes me so jealous! I have been exclusively pumping for four months now, and I need to pump FIVE times a day, my milk supply is so pathetic. I drink tons of water and eat oatmeal, the only thing I don't do is take fenugreek.
And even pumping five times a day, I still get only about 27 to 30 oz total and I need to give DS one bottle of formula at night.
Two more months of this routine and I am DONE!!!

prncssrachel, racheeee: do you guys feel guilty or bad that you're not feeding straight? I commend you for only pumping... and I would love to only pump (to gain a little freedom), but I think I would feel bad not experiencing that closeness with DS anymore.

I did feel guilty at first, but what can I do? She won't latch on and I beat myself up for it for the first week or so, but I can't continue to do that. It's not good for me and not good for her for me to be feeling that way all the time. I do not think I am missing out on being close to her. I am still feeding her, and still spending every waking moment with her. She still benefits from my BM, and honestly, I don't want to be the ONLY person to feed her. I feel that leaves JT out in the cold. He should have the experience of feeding her, as well. I guess everyone feels differently about it, and maybe I would feel differently if I went from BF-ing to pumping, but I don't really know any different.
Don't feel bad if you want to pump so you can have some freedom.

Re: Another question for BF moms
I'm an exclusive pumper, and I didn't feel guilty at all. The benefits of breastfeeding come from the milk itself, regardless of whether the baby ***** at a breast or a bottle. I had so much stress and trouble for the two weeks I was nursing DS due to him being tongue-tied, that bottle-feeding was far more pleasurable and bonding for me.
Pumping can be a PAIN at times, but I imagine nursing can be too. I love letting DH feed our son, and always having some pumped milk ready in case my parents want to watch DS for a while.
If we have a 2nd child I'm going to try nursing again, and maybe next time it will go better.

Re: Another question for BF moms
I pumped in the beginning because Emily refused to latch on and I would pump about 4-5 times a day. The first pump I got about 6 oz and then it dwindled on throughout the day, so that at the end of the day I was only getting about 2 oz. I'd say I got about 16-18 overall for the day, so I supplemented with formula.
My sister is EBF and she can't get more then 2 oz per pump!!
