When is a miscarriage "official"?

I got a BFP a week and a half ago and was the happiest person in the world. Then on Thursday night I noticed some bleeding (very dark brown and only when I wiped). I went to the dr on Friday afternoon and he told me that I was probably miscarrying from what he pulled out of my cervix (dark and greyish). I went for a sono after and he saw a sac and said I would probably be passing this weekend, but he was going to check my levels anyway.

I did not bleed or have much cramping and the weekend has come and gone. I'm not bleeding at all now. I got blood work done on Saturday, but there is nothing to compare it to since I only got blood drawn once, so he can't tell if the levels are going down, up, or staying the same.

A few questions --
1. When should I expect to get blood drawn again so he can track the hormone levels?
2. Can he tell anything from just one blood test?
3. When is it "official" that I have miscarried?
4. Should I expect a lot of blood in the next few weeks?
5. Will they do another sono to check and make sure everything is out of my system?
6. When do people start trying again?

Thanks for the answers. I've been a mess since Friday and I've been trying to learn as much as possible about miscarriages from old posts on here and the internet. It's a blessing to have all this information at my fingertips, but it's also driving me crazy!

It depends on what your beta is. If he confirms it's a miscarriage, you may get the beta tracked weekly until it's 0. That's what I did anyway......

2. Can he tell anything from just one blood test?

He can see if your levels are where they should be for the point of pregnancy you should be at.

3. When is it "official" that I have miscarried?

I think it depends.... With my last pregnancy, we went to a sono and there was blood in the sac and the baby and the baby's heartbeat was not even visible. That's when it was official in MY mind that I was not going to have that baby... However, it took 4 months for my beta to get to 0. I was 7 1/2 weeks.

4. Should I expect a lot of blood in the next few weeks?

Just based on my experience, there were lots of clots :( although, since you weren't far along hopefully it won't be too much worse than a really bad period. Chat Icon

5. Will they do another sono to check and make sure everything is out of my system?

When I miscarried naturally, we did a few sonos at the beginning, but then stopped doing them and just waited for the beta to go to 0 and to get my period. When that happened, I had a sono and it showed it was mostly clear.

6. When do people start trying again?

It really depends.. After my chemical, I was told to wait 1 month. After my 17wk and 8wk loss, I was told 2 months. After my most recent loss at 7wks, I made the decision to do surrogacy so I was never given a timeframe.
