Progesteron shots?

So my OBGYN is really pushing me to start getting progesteron shots to prevent preterm labor. I had preterm labor with my DD but they were able to stop it , they never figured out what caused it, they thought maybe missed UTI or dehydration, or something else.
I had her at 39 weeks (my water broke the day of my scheduled CS)
The OB says he'll call the insurance and set it up, if they don't cover it it's $25 a week, a nurse comes to the house...

I was reading up on it and I can't decide what to do, it has so many side effects. Plus I read that it doesn't always work...

So Iwas wondering if anyone has had them , what were the side effects if any and did it work for you?

Re: Progesteron shots?

hmmm
i see high risk ob PLUS high risk peri.
can you see a peri as well bc they SUPER specialize in preterm labor.

i stopped pio...prog in oil shots by around 11 weeks...so for me it was pain swelling and bloating.
alot of the girls on the if board take them....but not really for pre term.

i have heard of pio for preterm but not that often.

i see the peri dr kofinas in garden city. not sure where you are but if i was at risk for preterm i would see him in a heartbeat for a second opinion

i'm going to look into getting a 2nd opinion from peri .
Actually my OB practices in Clinical Genetics (M.D.) and Maternal & Fetal Medicine and Obstetrics & Gynecology. So I'm wondering if that's the same thing as perinatologist .

Re: Progesteron shots?

I had progesterone shots while pregnant.

I had a short cervix that continued to get shorter, even after having a cerclage at 16 weeks.

At 24 weeks I was in the hospital for almost a week to stop preterm labor. It took magnesium sulfate and procardia to keep the contractions away.

I ended up giving birth at 31w6d when my water broke.

My boys spent 3 weeks in the NICU.

I would do ANYTHING possible to prevent an early delivery.

Re: Progesteron shots?

I took them when I was pregnant with DD.

When I was pg with my first baby my water unexpectedly broke at 36 weeks 2 days. So when I got pg againmy on had me meet with a perinatalogist and he prescribed the shots. I took it once a week from about 20 weeks to 36 weeks. I did it myself. I think I had to buy 2 vials coming to about $200. I don't remember if my insurance reimbursed me for it. I had no side effects at all. I had asked about side effects before taking them and the dr told me soreness at sight of injection (duh). The only other side effect he mentioned was that it might not work.

Well, it worked! DD was actually 5 days late!

Re: Progesteron shots?

If your water broke at 39 weeks how is that considered premature labor? You can go into labor 2 weeks before or 2 weeks after your due date. And I never heard of that before. If I was to question anything it would be that.

In regards to Progesterone shots, I agree with the above post- the only side effect is soreness at injection site.

If it was me, I would do anything I needed to do to prevent preterm labor and ensure my baby can be as safe and healthy as possible.

maybe I wasn't clear, sorry. 39 weeks is not preterm no. But I went in preterm labor at 28 weeks, was admitted to the hospital for a week , I dilated 2cm. they gave me meds and stopped the labor. Let me go home on bed rest. Happened again a week later, I wasn't admitted, but was put on more meds and so on. So basically I was in "false labor" and had non stop contractions every day all day between 28 -39 weeks, but as long as I wasn't dilating more, my water didn't break and baby's HB was good (had to go in 2x week) all was ok. Then at 39weeks my water broke.
