My Winthrop Delivery .. sort of a review!
I'm not really going to call it my birth story, since that was relatively uneventful.. At 37 weeks, the decision was made to take him since I had very high blood pressure, even while on the highest dose of meds, and my blood work showed increased levels of creatine and uric acid, which means the high blood pressure was beginning to impact the function of my liver and kidneys, respectively. Plus I was beginning to show signs of pre-eclampsia (protein in urine). He's here now and doing great.
I know in the past few months, there have been many questions about the new "rooming in policy" at Winthrop. Yes, it's encouraged, and no, it's not mandatory. The nurses are more than helpful in bringing your baby to the nursery for the night if you want.
I had my 3rd child there on a Friday night (my last was almost 6 years ago, so things are now different). He was a c/s for a number of reasons. The baby is cleaned and cared for in the recovery area and my DH got to be there for it all with the nurse while I was bring sewed back together  As soon as I was brought to recovery, DH and baby were there waiting for me and I got to BF. After about 2 hours in recovery (once I started to get feeling back in my legs), I was wheeled to my room with baby in the bassinet beside me (DH had gone home earlier since it was 1:30 a.m. by the time I got to my room).
I got to a room and was a little disappointed I had a roommate. They do have private rooms, but our budget didn't include one this time around. The nurse told me that she was being discharged in the morning. and she was gone first thing, and for the next 3 nights I was there, I did not have a roommate, so it worked out really well and I can't complain. There policy is to try and fill all the rooms as singles, and then double up when needed to, putting you in a room where the other person will discharge the next day.
Every nurse I had (except one) was wonderful, very helpful and I had no complaints. The exception was a day nurse who just had no personality  Not friendly IMO, but fine.
Here's what I didn't like.... And I mean no disrespect to nurses out there. I know they have to start somewhere, but the student nurses where in my room every second at one point, asking if they can take my vitals (BP and temp) and wanting to look at my incision, feel my fundus  , etc. I know they work closely under the guidance of a teaching nurse, but having them do things on top of what the regular nurses were doing was a bit frustrating when I just wanted to grab an hour of sleep between feedings. It wasn't too bad, they were doing a great job, I just felt flustered every time they came into my room!
The food service left a little to be desired. I mean, the food was ok, but for some reason, they kept messing up, bringing me a liquid diet when I got cleared for regular food, and then just not having me in the system and me not getting meals. The nurses were great in getting me the meals eventually, but I have no idea why things were so messed up at one point.
A few other things come to mind - the room was bloody hot! I had trouble sleeping because I would wake up in a pool of sweat! they did have a window unit, but when I went to adjust it to cool, it just blew really hot air. The towels were small, like hand towels, so bring your own if you want to shower! I had a really tiny room, and besides my bed, there was only one chair, which the nurses made me get up and sit in, and it left no where for my guests to sit when they came.
Discharge was very easy and fast. The baby's paperwork was done 1-2-3 and then mine was done as quickly.
