Truvia- What does your Dr. say about this?

Its really hard to just stick to water since I have GD. My nutrionist said Spenda and Truvia are ok but just would like to know what everyone else's Dr. has to say about Truvia...Is it better than Spenda?

Ugh, you see, thats what frustrates me. The nurse at my OB office said no to sweetners yet the nutrionist said it was fine. Grrrr..Chat Icon

When I had GD I used Splenda every day............Truvia was not around yet. My OB and endocrinologist were fine with it.

Re: Truvia- What does your Dr. say about this?

I don't use sweeteners when pregnant but do when not pregnant or nursing. Just to warn you Truvia has been known to cause heart palpitations in some people. I am one of those people. I was put it in my coffee so I thought it was the caffeine but I then tried it on my cereal and had the same reaction. My heart started racing and I thought I was going to pass out. Stupid me tried one more time just to make sure and the same thing happened. It is not common but does happen so if you feel symptoms after using it you know why.

Will you drink water with lemon? You could also do water with a splash of juice to give it some flavor.

Re: Truvia- What does your Dr. say about this?

All doctors are different.

My doc says I can eat cold cuts if they are from a reputable place. He also says half a glass of wine once in a while to relax is fine. He also said I can have diet soda if I want. I sometimes drink 2 cans a week and sometimes wont have any for weeks. He is very old school and jokes that they things his parents did (or mine for that matter) while pregnant were far worse lol

Re: Truvia- What does your Dr. say about this?

Have you tried Stevia. When i thought I was going to have GD with my last pregnancy my dr said it was ok. I just found this as well.

Rebaudioside A: (Stevia) This is a new and common sweetner that is frequently used in soft drinks and juices. The FDA deems Stevia as safe during pregnancy; it has been give the GRAS (generally recognized as safe) rating by the FDA.

This is the article I found it in.

Re: Truvia- What does your Dr. say about this?

I was insulin resistent due to pcos before getting pregnant so I was treated as if I had gd my entire pregnancy (had to monitor sugars, take metformin and see a perinatologist). My peri said that there is not enough known about these products because they are new. I didn't have any artificial sweetners throughout my pregnancy and have not returned to them. I stuck to water 95% of the time, but drank it out of different things such as cups, bottles, with straws, without straws, added lemon, lime, etc. I would also drink a regular vitamin water a day and it never spiked my sugar. Have it with a hard boiled egg or a serving of almonds. Chocolate milk never spiked my sugar either. Finally I would cut Gatorade with a lot of water and add seltzer at times and it was a nice change. Hth. Feel free to fm with any gd questions!

I had 2 in my coffee every morning.
Dr said it was perfectly fine
He said to avoid sweet n low though

ETA- Truvia is NOT artificial.
It is made from a plant- not in a lab.
