Homeowners: Hurricane Prep
So I read in the paper that LI is so due for a hurricane. We have decided to make a shelf in our basement with all necessities to prepare us just in case.
So far we have:
tuna/peanut butter...foods like that
parmalat milk
flash lights
water
batteries
radio
canldes
matches
Other ideas.....I am a nervous nellie

We have one or two battery operated camping lanterns. They don't throw off heat nor are they a fire hazard like candles and they are not awkward to handle like a flashlight.
A regular phone that runs off the phone jack -- anything plugged in to an outlet won't work if you lose power.

DH and I have dissussed it and he seems to be convinsed that it is definitely going to happen. We live in Queens but I understand if the hurriacane does come, it will affect all of NY, not just LI.
We rented a house for 2 months in POconos, back in Januery for reson totalyl unrelated to possible hurricane adn my son will be there all 2 months with either DH, me or my parents. So, we are thinking that whoever is in NY when and if it hits, will grab all valuables and head out there. Supposedly, we are suppose to get some warning, cause when it get to Carolinas, we will have about 2 days before it comes our way. I think...

they say you should have 1 gallon of water per person, per day. that's a LOT of water 
I think what you're doing is smart.
I would stock up on some more canned food. see if you can find stuff in the camping aisles for portable essentilals.
we need to do something like this to. now if I could only figure out WHERE to put it all!

YES!!!!! make sure you have a corded phone! good one!
It is a good idea, unless you use optimum voice. In which case keep a roll of quarters for payphones.
You may want to add: first aid kit to your emergency stash. We keep 6 gallons of water and rotate them out every 6 months. It's a lot but good to know we have it.

OH! and if you are prone to flooding I'd put the shelf above ground.
We also have a checklist of what comes with us if we need to evacuate.

-Get all of your wash done prior, run dishwasher also
-Plastic cups, dishes since your water could be tainted after a storm
Extra gas cans
-Propane for grill since you might be grilling all your meat after the storm passes before it goes bad.

I am really getting nervous...even more so now that I know everyone else is nervous too.
I have Optimum...so I guess its cell phones for us.

If you have pets, provisions for them as well. Bandages/antiseptic, baby wipes, hand sanitizer.
We were discussing this the other day when it took 2.5 hours to get to work If word of a big one is coming, we're not playing the hero. We'll board up the house as best we can and then start an convoy out of here; to include my parents, grandma, and all of our combined pets (3 dogs, seven cats and a fish). Will need my van just to transport the pets. We have a friend upstate we could stay there or we have relatives in Long Lake. Of course we'll have to start out like four days in advance because it will take FOREVER to get off the island.
But if a Cat3 came our way, we'd be totally screwed. I know our house wouldn't survive

We've been through them already so their really isnt much we can do for prepness.
The most annoying part of it is putting the shutters up and taking them down. Plus moving the lawn furniture to the garage.
If you have a pool the best thing to do is toss the lawn stuff into the pool. We dont have a pool yet so it all goes into the garage.
Our first hurricane down here, Charlie we lost power for 3 days. We were really lucky with Wilma from last year that all we got was a ton of rain.
We're definatly prepared.

I just got a book called The Storm Gourmet: A Guide to Creating Extraordinary Meals without Electricity.
Its pretty neat, it gives you meals plans and shopping lists and things to have in the pantry.
