Help with name selection...
Would you give your child an Irish name if your last name clearly wasn't Irish?
To clarify, I'm of 100% Italian descent. DH is a mutt. He's mostly German, but also has some Irish & French roots (among others). The thing is, even though he's barely French, our last name is VERY French sounding (the spelling was Americanized, but the pronunciation didn't change)...it's not our name, but think something like "Fournier." Would it be weird to pick a first name like Aiden, Liam or Connor when you have a last name like that? **************** UPDATE: Thanks so much everyone! After a looooong debate, we finally agreed on a name this weekend (and it's none of those lol)! It was a name that we both originally loved, but hesitated on because he has a friend/coworker who just named her son it. In the end we both liked it too much though & since we don't see them socially we decided to go with what we really liked

I don't think those names are so irish that they stick out! And I love all 3 of them!

Re: Help with name selection...
Not at all. 1. those are actually becoming very popular here in the US, so they are becoming much more widely accepted 2. I struggled with this same exact issue when thinking of names for a boy. Our last name is Hispanic and both Dh and I really like the Irish name Declan for a boy. In the end we decided that this is America, a melting pot and it is becoming more and more common to have mixed names like that.
So, long story short, I say go for it!!!!

Re: Help with name selection...
Thanks ladies! We've been struggling with names & I really like Aiden so it's good to see the poll results so far I don't know anyone with kids that have those names so I wasn't sure if it would sound funny.
ETA: Ooh Declan is nice too!

Our last name is VERY German...and I'm Italian..
so (until DS#1 comes, which is decided to be Carl III) any child other than that will have very italian names...
Gianna Maria Dominic Antonio Francesca
and the last name is a 1 syllable german name...gotta get the italian in there somewhere!! :)

Re: Help with name selection...
I am having the same dilemma. I am Irish and dh is Italian. I am obsessed with all Irish boys names but i was hesitant to pick one because of his last name. In my case dh doesn't really like my name choices so who knows what we will decide but if he ever said he liked a few that I especially loved I would go with the Irish name for sure.

Re: Help with name selection...
Irish names are very hot and mainstream now I do not think it would be odd at all.
We have a very Irish last name though with a Mc...although I am Italian and I would not have used a very Italian first name think Gianni McNulty bc to me, that sounds off. Your example does not but I get what you mean.
ETA: For some reason this does not apply IMO to girl names had DS been a girl we were going to go with an Italian first name

Re: Help with name selection...
I say go for it.. we have a very italian last name but between me and my husband our children are an equal mix of italian, german and irish and I would love an irish first name. I loved Liam but dh wouldn't go for it. A friend of a family member actually named their son William but call him Liam for short. That is a cute idea I thought.

my dd is Giovanna Maria with an english last name (dont know where the name came from, dh's family is from germany)
nice choices my DD calls herself Gianna. She has been calling herself gigi, but now I'm trying to get her to say her full name, which comes out clearly as Gianna.

Re: Help with name selection...
Depends on the name. If it were super Irish (think Caolan or Niamh) it might look odd. But the names you mentioned are mainstream enough.

Thanks so much everyone! After a looooong debate, we finally agreed on a name this weekend (and it's none of those lol)! It was a name that we both originally loved, but hesitated on because he has a friend/coworker who just named her son it. In the end we both liked it too much though & since we don't see them socially we decided to go with what we really liked
