Attending family party with 1 month old?

My DH's Godson/nephew's communion is 5/5, Chat Icon is due 4/5. Do you think it's OK to attend his party? They live in PA, it's about a 3hr drive, which I'm not too concerned about. Is she ok to be around alot of people, maybe 50? They all will NOT be holding her just our immediate family.

Re: Attending family party with 1 month old?

I would say no. Just bc your due date is 4/5 doesn't mean she'll come then. And if this is your first pregnancy there is a very good chance she could be as little as 3 weeks old. If it were me even if she were a month or 5 weeks old I still wouldn't bring her around that many people and on that long of a car drive.

But ultimately you have to do what feels right for you. Chat Icon

I wouldn't personally because there is so much you have to prepare for. Is the party going to have loud music? Do you have appropriate ear guards to shield that loud noise? Plus, even if others will not be holding the baby (but believe me, they will all be touching the baby regardless- asking to hold it, or touching the cheeks or something) germs can be in the air and like the PP said, if your baby comes late at all, they will be less than 1 month old. I would be too worried to take that risk. If you really want to go, ask you pediatrician.

Thanks girls I wasn't really thinking about it until today. I'm thinking of just sending dh by himself and staying home with the baby.

I personally wouldn't-- and you can always blame your absence on your doc saying they advised you not to go...

I wouldn't commit to it. I wouldn't be so concerned about the drive or age(can always just say shes sleeping) but you might not feel up to it and who knows how the baby will be.

I wouldnt want to make the drive. DS is a month this week and we only take him locally. Dr said to just be smart about where we take him. Said having a kid is not a jail sentence but to be smart. So its not the people that would bother me its the drive.

Re: Attending family party with 1 month old?

I would not and I did not.
My DD was born 4/16 ( her due date, vaginal delivery). Our cousin's Communion party was 5/16. There was no way I was bringing a one month old. Loud music, lots of kids, way too many happy curious faces and fingers coming near us.
My DH went without me and i was totally fine with that.
Everyone understood why I wasn't there and DH was prepared with pictures to show off.

Re: Attending family party with 1 month old?

We had DS at a party, about that size at 6 weeks old. We limited the # of people holding him but otherwise it was business as usual. I exposed DS to a lot of people and situations early on. Not sure if its related or not but DS is 2 and has never been sick with a cold. Stomach virus once for 2 days at 6 months.

I agree. I took DS for an hour car ride at almost 3 weeks and it was stressful enough - I couldn't do that long of a drive.

Re: Attending family party with 1 month old?

My first cousin is getting married out of state 1 month after my EDD. I have to attend the weeding. We'll be staying in a hotel for at least 2 nights. I plan on having DC with me or DH the entire time. Since I'm due in July, I'm a little less concerned about being around so many people. Between having a summer baby this time and a 3.5 year old, I don't plan on being homebound for a long period of time.

When DS was 8 weeks old, we traveled to my parents' house for the weekend (2.5 hours). At one point, it was stressful and we almost pulled over so I could feed him. He calmed down for a few minutes and the rest of the trip was fine. I wouldn't be too worried about a long drive with a newborn. Just plan to pull over if necessary for feedings and diaper changes.

I personally would not go. Too many people, possible germs, especially with all the recent issues with unimmunized kids coming down with measles, mumps, etc.

My pedestrian says no crowds til 8 weeks. This includes this type of function. After battling croup just recently due to a Christmas family exposure with my first... Its good advice. Every time ds plays with his cousins he gets sick. In preschool now... The older one is a walking petri dish.

Can DH go without you? To be honest, there's no way I would go & take my 4 week old.

ITA

I'm certain they would understand a tentative yes right now since you have no idea when the baby will be here, really. But assuming DC comes on or before April 5th, I'd make the trek.

I would not go. My DD #2 was hospitalized twice due to fever this past november before she was even 2 weeks old and i didn't even bring her anywhere. I don't want to scare you-but it does happen-it is automatic hospital visit minimum of 48 hours if they get a fever over 100.4 within their first 8 weeks and spinal tap and you are the one that will have to stay in the hospital and be all stressed out.

Re: Attending family party with 1 month old?

JMO.. I would go.. When ds was born we had a death in the family and he was at a wake at 8 days old, yes that is days. Probably a smaller room than your party and more than 50 people going in and out and he was fine.. We kept him in his carrier most of the time sleeping in the back of the room with a light blanket covering it. When he was awake, like you said, only immediate family was holding him (probably the same amount of people that would be holding him if they were visiting me at home) at that age though all they do is eat and sleep so if you think about it your dc won't be passed around as much as your think. It is a godson/nephew so i'd think they would really want you there. Also being the party will be in May then maybe you and your family can take turns just walking around outside for a little while with the baby so that she will get fresh air.

i wouldn't commit to anything yet. you have NO idea what your baby will be like. maybe she will love the car and be pleasant and sleep, maybe she will scream blood murder for 3 hours. you wont know until she is here. and that's beside all of the obvious issues with shots and what not. so i would give a tentative until she is here and you can give a real answer. the mom should understand!!

Re: Attending family party with 1 month old?

I would go. DS was born January 11 and I took him to my parents superbowl party 3 weeks later. He stayed in the bassinet sleeping or I held him. There were about 30 people there, maybe 2 or 3 held him. He didnt get passed around and everyone understood. I would just definitely keep her away from kids.

Re: Attending family party with 1 month old?

I personally wouldn't go, but I'm very cautious about how many people the baby is exposed to in the beginning. I especially don't like alot of kids around the baby. When I had DS, Pediatrican told me to not bring the baby out in public for the first 8 weeks.
Anything can happen. I had 50 people over for DS first birthday and 1-2 days later he came down with a stomach virus. It was awful!!! We lived with my in-laws at the time and the whole house got it. DS was so dehydrated, I almost had to bring him to emergency room.
