Wow...reading a lot of accidents lately...
and most pertaining to pedestrians being hit/injured/killed.
Just newsday today, i think there was 3 articles of pedestricians being struck.
Its hard for me to read esp when 6 months back my best friends brother was on a bike with a friend, hit and run by a box truck and killed his friend. My friends brother is doing ok but still has a journey ahead of him.
Whats going on?
I feel like its increased a lot and cant but think that texting while driving is a possible source.

My mom's friend's husband was killed by a hit and run driver years ago and he was never caught. They make me sick and I hope he/she is haunted by nightmares for the rest of his/her life.

Re: Wow...reading a lot of accidents lately...
between my friend being killed, that little girl in china, one of our poster's nieces just being taken off life support...I just CAN'T with this world anymore.
people are outrages about what happened in china...but the moral highgroud that we spew our rage from is crumbling out from under us. we are hardly better to each other as a society.
I need to get where I need.
YOU need to get out of MY way.
faster bigger better richer.
we are going to hell in a handbasket.

Re: Wow...reading a lot of accidents lately...
DH has been on my case about getting bikes so we can get around Queens/Brooklyn/NYC in a more eco-friendly manner (though I do take the subway everyday, sometimes on the weekends we drive around). I'm absolutely terrified of riding a bike, sharing the road with cars. Like the OP, I feel like cell phones/texting while driving has caused so many accidents and I have such a fear that DH or I will end up hurt (or worse) because of some other person's selfish, stupid and ILLEGAL behavior behind the wheel.
Ten years ago, I had no problem tooling around on my bike. I felt, for the most part, safe. But ten years ago, cell phones were a rarity. The ME-ME-ME attitude was not prevalent.

i agree, When i see pedastrians running/jogging or riding their bikes in the street, I am honestly amazed at how brave they are.

I noticed that teenagers often think they are "entitled" whether by foot or behind the wheel. Lately I see teenagers walking across streets without looking, usually holding a cell phone and texting.....................or in a car they will just assume they have the right of way, no matter what the scenario. I'm not saying teenagers are always to blame, but they are definitely adding to the sad statistics.

Re: Wow...reading a lot of accidents lately...
I just told dh that any politician around here can win my vote by promising a crackdown on reckless driving---enforcement--punishments that stick and hurt--, etc.
It's an issue that affects quality of life as much or more than most of what politicians fight about. Plus, the revenue collected ($$$) could pay for the increased presence. Win win win. So why not?
Every time someone weaves in and out of traffic, cutting people off and slamming on the brakes... I can't help but wonder if they realize how many lives they're putting at risk because of their selfishness.
The real question is what are we, as a society, going to do about it?

Re: Wow...reading a lot of accidents lately...
It's so scary! My DH was almost killed while riding his bicycle - 2 months before our wedding. The driver said that he saw him, but thought he had time to turn anyway and ended up hitting my DH (then fiance). It was a horrible situation! He had to be taken to the hospital by ambulance and barely survived the trip there. He had 40 staples in his stomach, glass stuck in all parts of his face, road rash covering his arms... it was just crazy. It's been almost 5 years and I'm still scared whenever he rides his bicycle!!!

I've had kids look at me like *I* am the problem when they're walking down the middle of the street!
It's not just kids, though... I had no fewer than 4 cars almost take me out when we were finishing up Saturday's car seat check at Tanger. People just drove around the barrier. One had a NY Senate plate, she almost ran me and CarseatChris over.
The sense of entitlement is sickening.
