Contractions on one side?

Last night I woke up at 3AM with cramps/contractions on my left side. Almost felt like an intense ovulation pain -but only in that area. I could feel my stomach harden and know they were contractions - but never experienced it on one side. My first labor I got to the hospital just in time to push so I'm not super sensitive to every twinge. Anyone experience something like this?
I am 38 wks plus and should go this wk (according to MD and my boys were born in 38th week). I watched the contractions and they were all over the place from every 4-as much 10 minutes apart so I know it wasn't "it" - obviously since I'm still pregnant but I think if I would have went to L&D they probably would have kept me and given me something to make the contractions consistent or broke my water (I was given this option with #2 but declined).

I just asked my ob about this on Monday! He said it that depending on the baby's position it is possible to only feel it on one side.

See this happened to me and I was sooo confused with both pregnancies. I would get this one quarter sized hard section near my ribs for about 10 seconds... With DS I thought it was the way his butt was positioned, with DD, I thought it was her kicking me, since it was so high up. Well, I went for my 39 week appt and they decided to hook me up to the monitor to see if I was contracting and I was actually having minor contractions in that spot every minute and a half. I was shocked b/c I thought it was kicking me, since I only felt it in one tiny spot. Needless to say I was induced an hour later. lol I was so confused though!!
