Garden City

DH and I just started house hunting. Chat Icon I am from Huntington and he is from Roslyn but we currently live up in Connecticut. We have been looking for a few weeks now in the Roslyn/Manhasset/Port Washington area but want to expand our search to see what else is out there. Can anyone on here tell me about areas of Garden City as we are not too familiar with the town. All I know is that the school district is good (from the rankings I see online) and that the houses look gorgeous. Can anyone describe which parts of town we should be looking in?
Thanks!!

Re: Garden City

I'm not too familiar with the parts off Garden City but just keep in mind that the further south you go, the closer you will border with Hempstead and the houses become more affordable. I know that the nicest area I've seen is just west of Franklin Avenue, those houses are gorgeous and the streets are SO wide. Good luck! Chat Icon

Re: Garden City

We just moved into Garden City a month ago.

Originally we looked in Port Washington/Manhasset and Garden City. The house we ultimately bought was our 5th offer, and I am happy the way it all worked out...when we saw this final house listed we were the first ones in and put an offer on the spot. The first 2 in port washington, 1- in Manhasset, and 1- in Garden City before this house. So I think they are all great towns with excellent SD.

I would say Garden City and Manhasset are very similar. Port washington offers a bit more diversity. (port is a little out of the way from everything, main rds, there is really only 2 ways out...and Main St gets very congested). Manhasset and Port are a great train ride.

My DH's family grew up in Manhasset, so initially we thought we would end up there. What we loved about Garden City was it's close to everything, a great center of town, good School District, you get a little more house/backyard then in Manhasset.

Now that we are living here for a month, I also can say I love my neighbors too. There are more young families and children around us than I ever could of imagine, and that is important so my DD has a ton of playmates. When we were looking we searched only the Mott/NE section and Estates Section. That was bc my DH only wanted the Merril Ave or Mineola train line. He was not a fan of the Garden City line. There are so many nice parts of GC, NE, Mott, Western, Country Life, Estates, central, etc. Like a PP poster shared...some of GC borders Hempstead on the South area of Garden City.

please feel free to FM me with any questions....hopefully I can help ...( but still relatively new to the town).

I got a great deal of help when I was searching in GC from a few girls on LIFAMILIES!!! Chat Icon

Re: Garden City

My Mom almost moved there awhile ago ..and I don't know if the "rules" still apply - but the town itself had rules about the color of the houses, fencing, putting in a pool, etc. which she wasn't thrilled about. You may want to check into those things rather than find out later.

Re: Garden City

There aren't really any bad areas of GC but there are some major roads and a few blocks on the edge of town that I would try to avoid. It really depends on your budget, I can help with specifics if you want to post or FM. I grew up there.

I babysat in Garden City for years, and for the most part, the community is very good. There are a ton of programs for every age (children-adults), and there is a good sense of community there. There's plenty of shops and restaurants nearby.

As some pp mentioned, there are some strict rules about different things in the town. The no parking on the streets rule was never enforced (at least not on the street I babysat on lol!) I - along with handfuls of other people - parked on the street every day and never had a problem.

You can park on the street during the day - it is only restricted overnight. If you need an exception (redoing your driveway, having guests stay late, etc.) you just have to call the town and notify them. They also restrict parking near the train stations on the street so that people don't park all day long when they commute to work.

I was born and raised in town as well and I also have a house in town and my parents and grandmother still live in this town as well. I have two children who will go to the schools, and both will be in preschool this year. I would be more than happy to answer any questions you might have about areas, or anything you need to know. Please feel free to FM me anytime!

Well they have those rules to keep the "feel/charm" of the village. I haven't heard about the color of the homes before.

You can park in the street. There are a few blocks that have no parking during the day because they do that to keep commuters who don't want to pay to park at the station from coming into the village and parking in front of people's homes for the day. The no parking for the village is a safety issue and runs from 2-6 am. I thought that was pretty standard rule for villages. I have seen those signs driving into other villages.

Villages run differently - and town also has their own police etc.
