I live in Ohio and mom still lives on LI wiht the rest of the fam. I feel llike if my mom misses the birth of my first child i will be devastated. How are you making sure that your mom is there? My mom could book a ticket to stay 2 weels, but what if baby comes early or late? What are you planning?

My parents live in FL and I live on LI. My sister is due in December and I am due in January so I am lucky that they decided to rent a place up here for winter. So they will be here from Thanksgiving through February.

Re: Does your mom live OOS?
My mother lives overseas and definitley won't be here for the birth. I guess after living afar from my parents for so long I have come to terms with the fact that they will miss some of the most important times in my life. They will be coming to visit two months later and to be honest, I think I would prefer that. I hope to have myself organized well by then and ready to entertain guests.

Re: Does your mom live OOS?
My mom lives in Boston, and i live on LI. There's no way to predict when the baby is going to come, and so we've come to terms with the fact that she won't be here for the birth itself.
She suggested coming down 2 weeks after is born when DH goes back to work so she can stay with me and help me out then. It really stinks that she won't be here for the first days when he's born, but she understands that it would probably be more stressful to have her staying with us during that time and she's giving us a chance to get settled on our own before staying with us in the meantime, we hope to be able to do lots of chats on Skype!

Re: Does your mom live OOS?
Crashing...
I live in FL and my mom is in NY. My plan was to call her (and my dad) when labor started so they could book a flight ASAP that day. Labor started around 8:30am nothing crazy so I called them and told them i'd call back if it was definitely steady labor. Called them back about 10/11am when contractions were bad, plenty of time for them to leave work, book flights and be here by early evening. But I had DD less than 5 hours later so they didn't make it in time for the birth. I thought I was going to be more upset than I actually was... I had DH and my MIL & SIL in the room with me and since i'm really close with them I was happy they were there. And I was just grateful to have had a quick labor/delivery.
ETA: So my advice, tell her to fly out as soon as you feel any kind of contractions. If I said to get a flight right at 8:30 instead of waiting and calling them back they may have made it.

Re: Does your mom live OOS?
For my first I was a week late and I ended up with a scheduled induction so my mom was able to fly in on the day it was scheduled.
You never know what the doctor will say or how you will progress so you may be able to plan better than you think.

Re: Does your mom live OOS?
My plan all along was for my mom to NOT be here for the delivery and for her to be here when we came home. My stepfather refuses to come to NY and he also refuses to let her be here for any extended period of time. So, I was a c-section, so she came up on the day I was released from the hospital, but DS ended up staying in NICU for 10 days (6 days after she arrived in NY). She ended up staying here for 2 weeks total. A week in the hospital and a week when we got home. I wanted her longer, but my stepfather wouldn't have it.
This time around I have DS. I just found out yesterday that they are doing an amnio at 35 weeks to see if 's lungs are mature, and if they are they are taking her (I had DS at 35 weeks due to a placental abruption - which is dangerous). I need here to be up before I actually have the C-section to watch DS so DH can come with me. This is going to be interesting and I'm honestly not even sure how its going to work out
