Did you find your lamaze class beneficial? Was it worth the cost/time?

If so, where did you take it?

Re: Lamaze

i took a childbirth class that included lamaze and found the breathing thing to be really dumb... you can basically do any breathing pattern b/c the whole point is to distract you from the pain, not take it away.

ITA.

If you want to take a natural birth class, take a Bradley course. We did this and it was ABSOLUTELY worth it. FM for info.

If you just want a crash course in birth, drugs, and baby care, contact your OB or the hospital where you're delivering.

I was really happy I took the class. It was an 8 hour class, and only about one hour (maybe less) was about the Lamaze breathing. The other 7 hours were about what to expect during childbirth and right after, the details of epidurals, c-sections, breastfeeding, etc. I've been doing a ton of reading but it was different being in a class. I'd recommend it - the one I took anyway.

I took the 8 hour Child Birth class at Good Sam and it was really long. The lamaze part was ok, it was really short and the breathing is basically the same as yoga breathing. Most of the stuff she went over I already knew. They made us watch different videos of child birth with different scenarios. What I found most useful was the discussion about pain medication and side effects. I always wanted a natural birth but was open to am epi but this helped me want a natural birth even more.

Re: Lamaze

I just started a 5 week course through our hospital yesterday. We watched a couple of videos and learned some breathing techniques. I'm really happy we are taking the course because it is teaching us the different phases of labor, the lingo, etc. I think it will be well worth it.

I took a Bradley class before I had my first & found it to be REALLY worthwhile. Unfortunately, due to circumstances beyond my control we didn't wind up w/a drug-free childbirth, but I did feel very comfortable with my decisions thanks to what I learned in the course.

In the end, thanks to my asthma I couldn't use the "new" slowly exhale through your contractions technique & I wound up using the good ole, stupid sounding hee-hee-hee-hoo-hoo-hoo breathing method from the old days. It felt sooooo much better to me & it really got me through it. It's pretty easy to do though - I don't think you need a course just to learn that. The nurse coached me through it Chat Icon
