When did you / do you start selecting them? Are they present when the baby is born?
Is there a checklist of what I should look for?

Re: Pediatrician
I didnt chose mine until I was 36 weeks. I informed my OB and was told that the hospital will contact them once the baby was born. I ped will stop in to examine baby before allowing us to leave the hospital.

Re: Pediatrician
i started looking into it around 24 weeks. After much research I have narrowed my list and made appts. to visit. As far as what to ask, you have to decide what is important to you and what you want in a ped. Like solo dr./multiple practice, hours, do they do tests in office, what is their philosphy etc.

Yes they do come to the hospital when the baby is born to check on the baby.

Re: Pediatrician
IF the doctor you choose is affiliated with the hospital you deliver at then they will come to the hospital. If they are not you will just use on of the hospitals staff pediatricians. With baby #1 I delivered in the city (Lenox Hill) but lived in Queens so I wasn't able to find a doctor I liked close by who could come to the hospital. Now with baby #2 we are on LI delivering at NSUH so our pediatrican will be coming to the hospital.
I think between 30 & 33 weeks is a good time to begin your search. If you go on recommendations it shouldn't take long to come to a decision.
