What foods are safe to make at home?
I know I can make what I buy in the store (bananas, pears, sweet potatoes, etc.) but are there other fruits and veggies I can make for her?
She's 5 months and eating Stage 1 foods.

Re: What foods are safe to make at home?
The only foods I heard are not safe to make at home are: carrots, beets, spinach, turnips, and collard greens. Apparently even if bought organic they may be high in nitrates, which little babies aren't ready to process. (Baby food companies test nitrate levels, so they are safe then.)
Otherwise, you should feel free to make any of the stage one foods at home if you are feeling extra energetic.

Re: What foods are safe to make at home?
TY! I saw some moms make mango....is that safe at this stage?
and should I steam, boil, or microwave cook the foods that need to be cooked (I read on several webpages that steam is best, but I don't have a steamer)
and is it so terrible if I don't buy organic?

Re: What foods are safe to make at home?
Noah had some Mango tonight and he SCHLURPLED it down! He loves Bananas too! This morning he got bananas all over so my husband and I sang to him....If you are going to San Francisco, be sure to wear banana in your heir.....oh we do laugh at the child!
So far I have made Carrots Butternut Squash Sweet Potatoes Mango
I steamed the veggies for about 15 minutes until they were really soft, then I used my stick blender to puree them. For the carrots, I pushed them through a sieve to make sure I got all the bits that weren't soft enough.
I haven't bought Organic for veggies that you peel the skin off, I think its not always worth it! You are still a FABULOUS mom if you don't buy organic!!! You don't need a fancy steamer, I use a steamer insert in my pans!
Try this website, Annabel Karmel I have her book and have used it for learning ho to do my first purees, she also has some good recipes for like veggies in cheesy sauce etc... Image Attachment(s):

I have only mashed bananas so far, she likes it so much better then the jarred bananas, which she will not eat.

I cooked everything at home from the very beginning. I only use organic though.
If you are interested in making home made baby food your might like First Meals by Annabel Karmel. I has all the info on what to give, when, how to make it and what kind of nutritional value each food has. Also, tones of great recipes.
