Breast Pumps

What breast pump are you registering for or buying for yourself?

Also, will you be a SAHM, working part time, working full time?

Most likely I am staying home or working part time, so I wonder if I will need the double electric pump, or if a single pump is enough?

Re: Breast Pumps

I wasn't sure what to do about this. I def plan on trying to breast feed... BUT I was worried that for whatever reason I might not be able to. So I decided to rent from the hospital rather than buy or register for one. They are expensive and it would be a waste if I wasn't able to BF.

Re: Breast Pumps

With DS#1 I got the Medela Pump In Style Advanced. It's a double and it worked great. (I think the double is such a timesaver)

I'm a SAHM.

One suggestion -- Maybe wait to see if BF works out before buying the pump. I know there are a lot of restrictions as far as returns go. If you get one and then don't end up using it it'll be such a waste of $.

Re: Breast Pumps

I do not want to purchase a breast pump until I know for sure whether or not I will be able to BF. Sometimes the milk doesn't come in or you just have a hard time, in what I've seen with family and friends.

Many people have told me that the best thing is to rent the pumps from the hospital first, and then later buy a retail pump when your supply is good.

I just worry about purchasing an $$$ pump and then not being able to use it if I have trouble BFing.

This is great advice-one of my good friends got the Medela Pump in Style for her shower a few years ago, and her DS never took to breastfeeding....so guess what? She gave me her pump, and I went and bought all new suction cups, valves & membranes, and tubing (same as if I would have rented one)..and I am pumping away! Her loss is my gain Chat Icon

I will say, DS is a champion breastfeeder, so if I had to, I would just buy my own pump...but its nice to not spend over $300 and save some money.

When I return to work, I'm shortening my hours to 30 hours/week (still considered full time at my job). I spoke to a local lactation consultant, who advised that I pump in the morning and night (immediately after feeding), and then mid-day while at work...she also said that when I'm home to keep EBFing, bc that gives your LO more milk than just pumping.

My last piece of advice-when you're in the hospital you'll get a packet of all breastfeeding info, which includes the names & phone numbers of lactation nurses on LI...take advantage! I found a nurse 2 miles from my apartment and she's given me wonderful advice.
You can also get names of lactation nurses on the Medela website if you lose the booklet from the hospital.

FM me if you have any more questions Chat Icon

Re: Breast Pumps

Thank you girls! I guess I will looking into renting. How much is it to rent? And then I buy all the attachments, is that how it works? Otherwise, it's kind of gross using something other women used to breastfeed, right? I'm a germophob!

Do I look into renting once I give birth, or before?

Call up the hospital you are giving birth at, they will have rates.

They are usually pretty reasonable.

The pump itself is the only thing that is 're-used' -- all the attachments, cups, suction, tubing, etc. is brand new and not re-used.

got the medela pump in style advanced - covered 100% through insurance. I will be returning to work full time after 12 weeks off and wanted something that didn't take very long to pump. Hands free or not wasn't relevant for me since I can't pump and work at the same time anytime.

Re: Breast Pumps

SAHM. Bought my pump after DS was a successful breastfeeder. I got the Medela Pump In Style.

I wouldn't recommend making the investment until you are sure BFing is working for you. Its expensive and non refundable.

Def rent one. I was given the Medela in style by a friend who used it once. I tried it a few times and it worked so so, but it seemed really time consuming. When DD was 4 days old, she had to be hospitalized for jaundice, and the hospital allowed me to use their pump, so they could feed her, while she stayed over night. Long story short, the hospital grade pump was so much more powerful and I was able to pump double the amount in half the time.

So, I wound up just renting the same pump for $40/mo. So much more affordable, and the amount of milk I get is outrageous in such a short amt of time.

I am currently renting a hospital grade pump since I was told by the NICU that I had to use the hospital grade pump....Through the company Winthrop uses the pump is $75 a month but a lot of insurance companies will cover the cost (of course mine doesn't Chat Icon ). Winthrop will give you the kit you need (new and sterilized) for free. hth
