Can you write off property taxes
this is the first time we are doing our taxes since we bought our house. Can we write off our property taxes?

yes if you itemize your deductions, not take the standard deduction

absolutely, its part of your itemized deductions... and your mortgage interest. those 2 items alone should qualify you to itemize your deductions rather than take the standard deduction!

Also, make sure you include any taxes that were paid to the seller at closing. You can find them on the HUD-1 form that you should have gotten.
