It's just a waterproof pad that you can put on your lap so your pants don't get dirty when your NB (inevitably) has an explosive poop or spit up.
I used them on the changing table but that's it

instead of those I bought some thick cloth diapers to use as burp cloths/lap pads. They come in packs of 6 so it's pretty cheap.

I used cloth diapers and receiving blankets. My poor sister though. Both my kids had accidents on her in the hospital!
