What if something happened?
Okay I know I am probably neurotic but I had an awful thought today...what if I were to fall down the stairs while holding the baby or even if my DD was just in her chair / crib...what would happen if noone discovered her until later in the day....and I am imagining I would be knocked unconscious......
I live in a detached house, work from home and my DH doesnt get home until near 5pm...
My DH does call some days but if he is really busy at work he may not....I am thinking of getting him to start calling during the day now just to make sure we are okay..
Am I nuts?

Re: What if something happened?
do you usually fall and hurt yourself now? why would you with the baby? maybe you should get one of those bracelets if you are concerned the ones for the Ive fallen and cant get up commercials. or do things slowly when you think you are going to put yourself and your baby in harms way.

No - you're not nuts. I've imagined every horrid scenario where I'm unconscious in a car & my kids are crying & need my help. It just makes me think about driving more carefully.
I did fall down our cement steps holding Joseph was he was about 7 months old. I can tell you that your instinct to protect your baby kicks in like never before.
If this makes you feel any better, you probably wouldn't be knocked unconscious for an extended period of time.

Re: What if something happened?
I have had these fears too!! And I hate to admit t, but I;m sure it has happened often. Mothers (especially new ones) are overwhelmed, slightly amemic, possibly low blood sugars, etc, I'm sure mothers pass out constantly (I hate to think of it). Luckily we are alwasy so busy so if I didn't show up somewhere chances are someone would call and then coime looking for us.

Re: What if something happened?
The first week home with Sarah I didn't realize I was dehydrated and was headed downstairs after putting her down for a nap and nearly passed out and fell down the stairs. Fortunately someone was home and caught me, but it scared the cr@p out of me. I'm very careful ever since to make sure that my head is clear and I'm not rushing when I'm carrying her. Whoever is at the door, on the phone, whatever can wait until I have time to deal with it.

Re: What if something happened?
I think I got concerned as I have felt light headed a couple of times in the past week-lack of sleep.....and I know I rush around trying to get everything done....I suppose I really need to slow it down and realise I cannot be everything to everyone.....
Glad to hear I am not the only neurotic one out there though......I used to never worry about things but since my DD arrived its all I do...I close our bedroom door at night so that if someone tried to come in - i.e a kidnapper I would hear them!!!all the while my DD's crib is pulled tight up against my bed and I really havent slept fully since she was born..she is 15 weeks today and I think I have only dozed since she arrived...no wonder I am light headed

I hate to even quote this posting, but I lived your very own nightmare. I experienced this in my home just 2 weeks PP with DS in my arms. I was home alone in the afternoon and had gone up stairs with DS. I did some emailing of pics of him and then wanted to go back down stairs to finish decorating my Xmas Tree. We have 16 stairs and all I can remember is that on the way down ~ 3 from the top I "passed out" and fell all the way to the bottom with DS in my arms. Lucky for us, DH was off that day. He was at the gym though during that time. He did come home though to find me at the bottom of the stairs knocked out and DS still in my arms crying. He didn't know what to think and what had happened. He said he managed to get me up and sit me on the couch in the living room. He then called his sister to come over. She came and they called 911, because they said I wasn't making any sense and didn't know who I was. Baby and I were both brought to the ER via ambulance and checked out. I had a CAT Scan done and all sorts of test. It turned out I had syncopy r/t dehydration and a UTI. DS was okay, not even a scratch. Thank GOD, because he sure was watching over us that day. If DH wasn't home that day, who knows how long I could have been laying unconcious on the floor with DS in my arms crying. I don't remember nearly any of this, DH told me all that had happended. I ended up staying 3 days in the hospital. It was scary and didn't go back up stairs for months after that. I still ask DH to please always call and check in with me.

Re: What if something happened?
I worry about this now more that my daughter is mobile. Before she could move, sure she would have cried a bunch, but she'd be fine until DH got home from work. Now that she is moving around and climbing, she could get herself in some serious trouble if I was unconcious. UGH. Its so hard to be a mom.
Oh, and my hubby often works 16 hour days, so it could be a looooooong time. He does call a few times though, so I think he'd get nervous if he didn't hear from me after like 5 hours.
So, if you are nuts, so am I. At least you aren't alone right??

Re: What if something happened?
Oh wow, Ive worried about MANY "what if" scenarios, but never this one. This post was a good wakeup call
Although my son is old enough for mommy to start teaching him to call 911 now... you dont wanna think of these things, but you have to....

OMG Anne how scary!!
I worry about stuff like this all the time. I'm a big klutz so I always worry about falling when I'm holding the baby. When Jake was around 7 months I slipped on some ice while carrying him on our walkway but managed to regain my balance without falling. But I can tell you that my heart literally stopped beating for a few seconds and the whole ugly scene that might have been flashed before my eyes.

Re: What if something happened?
I have fears like this all the time! I did trip one time going up the stairs while I was holding Christopher. It was a quick fall, but instincts kicked in and I tuned my body to the side so I wouldn't fall on top of him. It hurt the heck out of me, but he was fine.

Re: What if something happened?
texas4good WOW...that must have been so scary afterward....glad you are both okay.
I am glad to hear that I Am not nuts and there are a lot of other moms out there like me!! I guess its such a big transition from just taking care of yourself to now being a mom and someone else depends on you 100% and you really want to do the best job you can and protect them as much as you can...I talked to my DH about this last night after I posted and we have agreed that he will call a couple of times a day even if he is busy just to make sure......
Thanks for the replies
