RSV again

So, I woke up, went to get Alex and she was coughing and wheezing away in her crib. Took her to the doc and she has RSV again, and here we go again with the nebulizer hell. I thought this was supposed to go away during the warmer months? I'm so disappointed... looks like no GTG for us this Saturday Chat Icon

Poor baby! Poor Mommy! I hate when they're sick!

Was she a preemie? On your next doctor's visit, you should consider asking about the RSV vaccine before next winter & if your dr could get your insurance to cover it. I know a few years ago the shot was thousands of dollars - and they only covered for preemies but since she's had it muliple times, maybe they'll cover?

Re: RSV again

I hated it when Caiden had RSV. We spent the night in the hospital, and we had to use the nebulizer as well. He hated that thing. I had to use it when he was sleeping or else I had to hold him down. Chat Icon It was not fun! I hope she feels better! Chat Icon

Re: RSV again

I hope Alex feels better soon. How do they know it's RSV? Do they do a test or do they just know from her symptoms?

I asked the doctor about that and she said that RSV is just a viral infection - the typical cold that you and I get throughout the year, but in babies, it can become aggravated and turn into wheezing. They didn't think it was RSV at first because she couldn't detect any wheezing, but she did some weird oxygen test and it showed that Alex wasn't getting quite as much oxygen when she breathes, indicating that she has some mucous buildup. They used the nebulizer on her and immediately after she started wheezing and coughing, because it broke up all the mucous.

Fortunately, we caught it early so I'm hoping that it will go away within 2-3 days like it did last time.

Re: RSV again

I am pretty sure there is an RSV shot for preemies..can you get that for your baby to help prevent this?

They said if it doesn't get better, or happens again, they'll give her the shot. Hopefully, it won't come to that. So much for the benefits of BFing! Chat Icon

Re: RSV again

OMG! Chat Icon I can't believe she's gotten RSV twice! Every baby I've known to have gotten this has had to be hospitalized! Chat Icon I'm so sorry, Beth. Have you told your daycare?
