Kia Forte
Don't know where else to post this...
Does anyone have a Kia Forte?
We are shopping for a second car (to finance), this car will be DH's primary work car. It needs to cheap (biggest factor  ), I want something with good safety ratings and it has to be good on gas...
We were thinking the Kia Forte - we saw some pre-owned Forte's with around 15k miles on them that were a lot cheaper than buying one brand new...I'm not sure if pre-owned is the way to go with a work vehicle though? Especially the distance my DH drives everyday - he goes far!
I was thinking maybe an Elantra. Other than that is there anything else out there that cheap. We are looking to spend 15k or less.
Any feedback? Or other suggestions? Thanks!

Aren't certified preowned cars supposed to come with some type of warranty?
As for Kia, I've persoanlly never owned one. I considered buying the Sportage until I saw the MPG, this was an 04 or something. It's much better now.
My cousin had a Spectra. She finally junked it after 15 years. The car never gave her a problem and she had over 200K miles on it!
I just googled it and that is a nice looking car for the $$. GL!

oh wow! that is good for your sister!!
it does come with a warranty, i forget the terms, i think it was 5 or 10 years or 100k miles whichever comes first (the 100k includes the previous miles)...so we'd have 82,990 miles left of warranty...DH will do about 23-24k miles a year driving to work so we'd have a warranty for only 3 1/2 years give or take as opposed to 4 1/3 years with brand new 0 miles...

One of my guy friends has an Elantra for work and he says its the best car hes ever owned!
No clue on the kia tho!

My Mom just got a brand new Forte after her car was totalled & she had a Forte as a rental and LOVED it. She was actually going to buy a Sonata which is much more expensive then she fell in love with the Kia. Its really new so I don't have any long term info.

i just got the hyundai sonata! i freakin love love love it!
i had the following cars in my lifetime:
dodge 400
geo metro
olds alero
jeep liberty renegade
town & country
dodge caravan
hyundai sonata
i LOVED my oldsmobile alero the most, then this car. i am so thrilled with the gas mileage and zipping around that i can do. 47 bucks to fill it up (2.80 something per gallon) and it lasts me two weeks. i am about 10 miles to work ... this includes driving around town on the weekends running errands.
make fun of hyundai all you want... i couldn't be happier!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We bought a Forte in July 2009, so we've had it a year.
I love, love, LOVE my Kia. Those are words I never thought in a million years I'd have said prior to driving mine though.
It handles well in the snow and rain and dry weather. Pickup is decent and it's been rather comfy when taken on long trips. It does GREAT on gas too. I drove to Philly then out to Lancaster and then back to Philly and then to LI one about a tank of gas. Normally I fill the tank once every 2 weeks or so, but I drive less per year than your hubby, about 10-12k.
We have had no problems in the year we've had it sans a reprogramming that needed to be done at the start of last winter because the check engine light had come on erroneously one time when it got super cold, but once they reset it there were no further problems.
It still drives like it did off the lot a year later, and it doesn't feel like a "cheap" car at all when you're driving.
IMO, it handles better than the Elantra. We test drove both (plus the Nissan Sntra) about 3 times each and the Kia just handled much better and was more responsive.

my only experience was with a rental. i had to drive a kia rio for about 2 weeks. the pick up wasnt great but it handled pretty well. i felt like i was driving a fisher price toy though... sorry

i hear you on it driving like a toy i felt that way in our honda civic and our hyundai elantra so we are used to that. DH test drove the kia and he liked it, it didn't bother him. we had a nissan murano and now we have an altima and we never felt that way in the nissans.
our civic and elantra went to crap - so because we had bad experiences with those cars it left a bad taste in our mouth - so that is why we are hesitant to spend more $ at honda or hyundai...if the car isn't going to last we rather spend the least amount of money possible on it 
i think we are going to go back to the dealer tomorrow. we were there about a month ago and we haggled for awhile and ended up walking out because we weren't ready to buy. they still have the same car on the lot so i am hoping we can chew them down even more than last time.

i don't have a forte, but i do have a kia. here are my tips:
* don't let them rope you into buying the extended (10 year) warranty. it costs a lot of covers almost nothing. plus, if you take it in to find out what's wrong and the repair falls into one of their loopholes, you either pay the inflated dealership price for the repair or pay them a $100 diagnostic fee for nothing.
* know that they depreciate very quickly. i had bad credit when i bought (desperately needed a car after making some youthful indiscretions), and i couldn't refinance with anyone once my score improved because the value of the car was so low.
* overall, i have been pretty impressed with the quality of the car considering it was so cheap!
