How much do we guess my taxes will go up?
Finally got notice that they are going to do the final building inspection for our home.
We front dormered and squared off our rear-dormer late last year. We also added a half front porch (not the full length of the house). We didn't really add much square footage wise - probably 250-300ft.
Anyone want to guess?

We dormered about 20 - 25% of our roof - a little less than half on one side only. Retained and existing bathroom but I don't think it was on the previous CO so it may have counted as an added bathroom. We didn't increase the footprint. Our assessed value in Town of Islip went from 50,000 - 54,000. The actual taxes are going up about $1200 from the previous year. About $800 of that is the school tax and $200 for police - the rest is spread out over the other stuff.

You can also get a phased tax exemption for capital improvements. You file with the town and have to provide documents showing the cost of the renovations. If approved, you are exempt for a portion for 8 years - it starts out that you only pay something like 20% the first year, and it goes up by another 10% each year until you're paying the full amount. Here's the state form - contact your town tax assessor for more info. You have to file before the spring deadline to take effect for the next tax year. We completed our work just after the deadline so we're stuck with the full amount for one year then it will kick in.

Thanks for this. Now if we completed work in 2009, and hope to do work again, possibly before the end of this year - should we hold off on doing this form?
