dishwasher + rust spots?

lately after running the dishwasher i notice that my glasses, plates etc. have rust markings on them (looks like splatter marks) and it's not on all the plates, etc....does anyone know what causes this..it's really annoying bc i have to then handwash whatever comes out w/these spots! TIA!

I get them on my good knifes and sometimes my silverware. They don't even come off when I hand wash them after. I didn't know why that was happening until I read the pamphlet that came with my Martha Stewart knife set. It says not to put them into the dishwasher, that it will cause those spots. So for now on, I hand wash all my knifes and could care less if my regular silverware gets the spots on them, the set was cheap and not worth the aggravation of hand washing
