Random Gas FP question

So - I'm cleaning up the living room before heading for bed tonight, and I notice a flame in the gas fireplace....Is this normal??

We rent, and we haven't used the fireplace in the year and half we've been here...I've never noticed the flame before!!

I assume it's the pilot light, but when I opened and tried to turn the switch it's already to "off"....There are quite a few cobwebs and such in there, because, like I said, we've never touched it....

Do I need to worry??? I am a bit paranoid about fire and CO poisoning, so I'm afraid to go to bed!

It's probably just the pilot light, BUT
If you're using Keyspan, call them immediately. They will probably come check it for you.
You could also call the local fire dept. , or the previous homeowner.

MOST IMPORTANTLY, be sure you have a carbon monoxide detector in your home!
