Do you live or have you lived in Eaton's Neck/Ashroken

Is it really a PITA to get out of and get to store and work?

It would only add 4 miles to my commute, but it just seems SO long.


Also, I have heard that Northport/E Npt SD has a pretty big drug problem (coming from SCPD officer) Any info on this?

I've never lived in Eaton's neck but I do know it's pretty far. Although beautiful!

There are ALOT of school districts with Drug problems. If I had to say, I would bet, ALL schools have drug problems

i don't live there but it will add time to your comute. you must do 30 mph on Ashroken Ave. plus unless you can take 25a to your work, you have to add more time to get to nsp or lie.

i agree with all schools have drugs and kids with problems with drugs.

My nephew's best friends live in Eaton's Neck and Ashroken...

The only thing I really know is there were days that school was in session but the kids from Ashroken were excused because the buses couldnt get to them. Beautiful area though.

I live a bit south of that area and leave before 6am to get to work. From my home to the NSP, at that early hour, is 15 minutes. If you are leaving Asharoken during rush hour, I'd say it could take you 20-25 minutes to get to the NSP... most N/S routes in the area are 1 lane each way.

BTW: My broker lives in Asharoken and he's wanted to move for over 2 years now. He works right off the LIE in Melville but his biggest complaint is the time it takes to get to the supermarket and parkways.

I grew up in Northport and I had tons of friends that lived out there. I do remember their parents saying that they made only one trip a day into town (off of the neck) cause it will add at least 15 mins to a trip. I would hang out there when I could drive and the bad part is Ashroken cause the speed limit is 30 and no joke if you go 31 the cops will pull you over. Ashroken has their own police force and don't have much else to do.

As for the drug problem in the schools....and this is coming from my mother who was a department chair for the district up until a year ago....the drug problem is no better or worse than other districts.

I will tell you when I was there in the late 80's early 90's there were plenty of drugs.....there always is....if kids want to find them they can. Its really more about how you raise your kids.

Beautiful area, but a real PITA IMO. You have to drive under 30 MPH b/c of ther Asharoken police, so it takes a WHILE to get out of there. It must take at least 20-25 minutes to get to the parkway.
I remember someone telling me that they have a hard time getting a pizza delivery b/c no one wants to deliver all the way to Eaton's Neck-lol.

Even if I had the money to move there, I probably wouldn't! No, it's gorgeous...private, secluded, beautiful. But getting to the grocery store will be 30 minutes. The strip is 30 mph. Not 31. And if there is a bad storm, it does flood which means access to stores is limited until the roads clear. We had one nor'easter in high school and EVERYONE from that area was absent because they couldn't drive out of there.

I guess it would also be different if you didn't have a big commute for your job. If you and your so worked in the area, then maybe it would be different. But if you had to hop on the nsp or lie every day...think about it.

I work off 25A and DH works from home ( but we do always think, what happens if he has to commute -LIRR- again). Does anyone from Northport park in Huntington Station? or is it easier to change trains?


What about Makamah Beach area? Is it still a PITA since it's a little further east?

While I don't live there I am very familiar with the areas, and I agree with what all of the others said. Plus, when there is heavy rain, the road into the Neck often floods, making it impassible for most vehicles. (Although considering how beautiful it is there, it may be worth the trouble!)

Makamah is much more accessible. (And also beautiful).

The district got a lot of attention for the drug problem a couple of years ago when two kids died of heroin ODs within about a month of each other, but I think they were already out of HS at the time. However, it's an excellent district and has a lot to offer its students. I agree though that I don't think you can find a school on LI without some sort of drug concern today.

There aren't as many trains from Northport and very few direct trains. So I was wondering if anyone actually drove to huntington to have a better schedule.

Those I know who live in Northport and work in NYC all commute out of Huntington or some drive in (off hours).

Just better options. My BIL lives in Ft Salonga but works long hours, if he gets caught at work and has to come to Northport at say 9 or 10 he might have to wait over an hour at Penn Station for a train there. At least with Huntington you know if you get caught at work there are more trains at later hours

I have a house in Eaton's Neck and although Asharoken is only 6 miles long, you can only go 30 miles an hours so it does take about 15 minutes to get into Northport. But,IMO, nothing beats Eaton's neck. And yes, sometimes during a very bad storm you can be stuck out there a couple of days if the road breaches, but it's a concession you have to be willing to make to live there.
As for going to the stores and stuff, no, you don't want to get home and realize you are out of milk since that will be at least a 30 -45 min round trip!
