random plant questions. weeds, or not?

are these following pictures weeds?

i moved in in december and have no idea if i have some sprouts of some perennials coming up. i didn't think perennials would come up now. especially since it is so hot.

#1 and #2 are the same, 2 is just a closeup.

i planted impatien and this is coming out of it:




same thing, i think, on the opposite side of the garden bed:


is this sage edible?



what's up with these lilly sprouting things?



bottom line - don't plant anything until after you are in your house for all four seasons!!

also - i have a holly tree i am looking to unload before my puppy destroys it!

I don't know what 1 and 2 are. If they are weeds, I don't have them in my landscape... What if you dig some of the roots out and put it in a pot, in case it is a plant? Then you can wait it out, see if it blooms. If it doesn't, you can chuck it.

When it comes to Sage, I'd be careful. I grow mine for it's flowers, not for the leaves. This is a good link for info but honestly, if I didn't buy it, I wouldn't try it.

That next picture could be Lily Grass which is kind of funny because that grows in my daylily bed. I pull it out because I'm not impressed by it. It's too wimpy to be as nice an effect as some ornamental grasses, and the flowers are boring to me.

Nice holly. I already have a holly tree that does not grow berries so I don't want another one closeby, because I don't want the berries falling on my patio. (I read you need more than one holly for them to produce berries)

But that's a really nice, full shrub. I love the leaves. What is your puppy doing to it?

I have those tall sprouting things as well and I wanted to keep em but honestly, all they do is fall over and look like a disaster... Mine has blue flowers that open and close... They are bulbs so you're going to have to dig them out... They take a little extra work to get out... DH was able to do it... I didnt have the patience

I think 1/2 & 3 are weeds. 1/2 will grow really,really tall and get berries if its what I think it is. I would pull it now.

I dont know anything about sage - sorry

AWESOME! everything is coming out tomorrow! except the sage of course.

i have a overgrown butterfly bush (now a tree) in my yard too, i just found out. and a hosta bed in the back corner of my yard. i HATE hosta. HATE HATE HATE Hosta (do you get how i really feel? )
those i want to yank out and donate to my sisters florist.. but next year, i think.

I got major work to do in this yard of mine... i just planted a rose of sharon in purple, i have to keep it tame though b/c its right out my large back window.

puppy has been digging and digging and digging and i know people love hollys, i don't b/c the prickliness of the leaves. thought i'd donate it before he digs this one out of the ground too.

The first one might be Pokeweed - if so it gets huge, and parts of it are toxic. They get white flowers then purple berries and have a huge taproot that is hard to get rid of.

You can prune the butterfly bush to one foot in late winter/early spring. If you see any dead branches, you can prune those now. It will come back like gangbusters.
