squeaky wood floor
We have wood floors in our bedroom and hallway/stairway upstairs. They are starting to squeak so bad that it wakes our son in the morning when we get up. Does anyone know how to fix it??? Does anyone know how much it would cost to fix something like this, or if carpeting would quiet the squeak at all? I am desperate!

if its loose boards you can get a floor repair guy to give you an estimate. When we redid our floors the guy fixed pretty much all our floors but the price was included within the sanding/poly.
if its rotted then they will need replacement which then you will be charged like $100 for a bundle of wood if its oak and the guy will replace but you will need them resanded and poly not sure if they can spot it for you or they have to do the entire floor.

It depends on whether it's the hardwood flooring, the underlayment, or the joists. A rug won't fix any squeaks, since the noise comes from wood moving against wood.

How would I know the difference between just a loose board and one that is rotted? I can't see any visible problems but I don't really know what to look for.

The extent to how much the floor flexes. If you have someone lying on the floor near where it squeaks, then have someone walk over the problem area, you'll probably see a little flex in the floor. If it looks isolated to two or three boards, then it's probably the flooring. If it's several boards, then it's probably the subfloor.
