Laminate countertops
Okay, I know I am asking a lot of questions today, but DH and I were talking about when we re do our kitchen what is worth it in our area to improve and what would be over improving. Of course we are going to be in the house for at least another 8 years (AT LEAST) so we will need to enjoy it as well. DH keeps going back and forth on granite counter tops. I was wondering...has anyone recently redone their kitchen and gone with a laminate counter top (for whatever reason)? I hear that the high end stuff is still cheaper than granite and it looks great...just wondering if you can post any pics and your experiences.
TIA!

Re: Laminate countertops
I don't have any personal experience with laminate but another option is going with the granite tiles.
I haven't heard anything bad about laminate though - my bro has laminate, my office kitchen has laminate, my ILs have laminate - all their kitchens are quite nice.

Re: Laminate countertops
We did custom Formica 6 years ago when we did our kitchen & it still looks perfect & functions quite well. I don't like natural stone in kitchens because of porosity and bacterial issues. We also had a shoestring budget so formica was an easy choice. ours has a matte finish so it doesn't scratch. We paid $800 including installation 6 years ago.

Re: Laminate countertops
If you had the budget, I'd go with a natural stone.. I think if you are going to throw any money into the kitchen, when you go to resell, the laminate could be a " why did they do this.."
You'll probably get more ROI on a natural stone surface vs. laminate.
And keep in mind, laminate can discolor/stain, isn't heat resistant, and can chip

I total understand everyone saying just go with natural stone...its better for resale, etc. Honestly it also depends on the neighborhood...I live in Massachusetts...in Foxboro to be exact and in my neighborhood no house that we looked at had a granite countertop...Its not that kind of neighborhood and our house is rather small...a starter house that we are improving and making slightly bigger and making a a small family house. With that in mind and the neighborhood and comps, while we would like to put in granite and might just make that choice if we find something we like that wont break the bank but in this neighborhood it wouldn't increase the value of the house that much because anyone looking to buy would be looking at it for the location and the schools.

Re: Laminate countertops
My MIL got a solid color laminate - and it shows ALL the scratches... My mom has a mostly solid with some speckles/marbling.
Mom's is about 25 years older then MILs and looks 100 times better.

Re: Laminate countertops
I will start off by saying not all granite is expensive, it just depends on what you want to spend and what color you want. If you want to reply back to me and I will get you a price on the granite top if you want, I can show you color samples, I will come out and measure to see how much you need.
