Watering lawns
I think I am causing the issues on my lawn. We have lots of green but some patches that are burnt !!! I think I am overwatering.
A few questions...
How often do you water?
Do you have inground sprinklers?
What times do you water?

We water once a day
We have inground sprinklers
We water starting at 3am
If you water during the day you might be burning the grass. Or the sprinklers might not be reaching these areas. We had this happen after the sod was installed and the sprinkler company had to come back and move the sprinklers a little. Now it's fine. HTH!

We were watering twice a day. Once at 730 am and then at 530pm. I think I may have burnt the lawn by watering that late in the morning... darn it !

Then again at 5 pm. Both stay on for about a half an hour.

nope, not since I have been watering 2x a day (per my landscaper). My lawn looks FANTASTIC compared to when we bought the house in April. I have been Mrs Green thumb with it. It's my mission to beat the dude next door. His lawn is to die for.

we do it once any time between 730 and 8 at night
they say watering at night is not the best option (for me its the only one) but its because it stays damp and cause fungus's to grow, but that still wouldnt be the issue with burn spots
it could be because:
the sprinklers are missing that spot
a dog is peeing on your lawn in that spot
you have some sort of bug
or the sun is beating down on that spot when it very wet (but I think this is the least likly)
I'm sure it could be other things, but that's all I know about lawns so far

I water at 330AM. My sprinker is set on the timer.
I've been spraying down the lawn too at night, like 9PM....
I'm the only one on my block without burnt grass!

we water once a day at 5am for about a half hour... our system is not inground, but it is permanent...

what time of the day are you watering and how long?
its best to water early morning before 5am for me..... watering while it is bright and sunny can cause burning... the water droplets act like magnifying glasses...
the amount varies with grass type and soil conditions.. but the general rule is 1 inch of water per week.... i measured this by using about 6-10 empty tuna cans placed all over the lawn... let the sprinklers run their cycle and checked how much water was in each can.... it will also show if you are getting an equal distribution of water in the area.
to see if it is getting enough water...take a narrow screw driver or stiff wire and push it into ground in several places. If you are able to penetrate to the root depth (usually 6-8 inches), then your soil is properly saturated. If not, then your watering is not reaching the desired depth and you may need to water for longer periods of time
it will vary how much water and how often your lawn needs it depending on a few factors such as soil type, grass type, amount of sun, etc....
