Compost piles / grass clippings

I wanted to start a compost pile but was reading some info on them and it said not to use grass with weed killer. Of course my DH uses the 4 step fertilizer program with the weed killer - so can i not use any grass clippings in the compost - or do i have to ditch the first clipping after fertilizer has been applied
