calling contractors back
When you get estimates from contractors/vendors for work being done on your house - do you call them back if you aren't going to give them the work?
i've had about 6 people come out to give us estimates for our driveway, we narrowed it down to 2 places, then down to 1. During that process, i'd had one vendor come back twice and he'd been emailing me with various cost options. It turns out we're going with someone other than this guy, but i'm wondering if it would be the right thing to do to let him know we've chosen someone else.
Part of me says yes since its a nice thing to do - the other part of me thinks that if i tell him we're not using him, it opens things up to him trying to convince me to use him instead by coming down in price, or him asking why we're not using him.
i don't know if i should just leave it, and if he contacts me then i'd tell him, or if i should tell him up front because he'd been very nice and helpful.
thoughts?

Re: calling contractors back
I wouldn't. even though it might be the "right thing to do" it won't be an easy process for you. And even if they cut their prices, thats not someone who I would want to work with anyway. they tried to rip you off first, then because they didn't get that chance, they should get a 2nd chance? IMO- no way!!!
if they call you to follow up, then you can say I'm sorry we have begun work with someone else, but thank you for your time
