We send an envelope direct to the carrier every 8 weeks when we pay the bill for the paper. I generally sent $8 and extra for Christmas. Our carriers have been really good - when we had a tree fall during the storm and our paperbox was tilted back away from the road and blocked so he couldn't drive up he would stop the car and get out to put the paper in the box rather than just toss it on the lawn.
