The nerve of people you hire...
my father needed to have his chimney cleaned and checked. He had someone come over last week and the guy went on the roof to check it out.
When he came down he told my father that he was going to need a new metal plate on the roof and it would cost about $700
My father explained that it would have to wait for now because he really couldnt afford that right now. The guy had the nerve to say to my father: "you are going to tell me you cant afford that with this house?"
lets just say my father used some choice words, told him he had no idea what his situation was and told him to get the f@$* off his property!
How dare people

Re: The nerve of people you hire...
this reminds me of the time i had a math tutor to pass the regents.
she was a b!tch as it was already, and the question had to do with money or change or something of that sort.
we were sitting in my parent's dining room, and I had issues with this particular math problem.
she got impatient and actually said, "Oh please, I know you don't have any problems with money."
ugh. little did she know my parents just saved & we never went on fancy vacays and most items in the house were from tag sales!
your dad did the right thing

That's not uncommon with many of the fly-by-night chimney companies that offer cheap cleanings or free evaluations. They'll tell you that you need an expensive liner, chimney cap, etc.
For fireplace cleaning we use Chief Chimney - John Pilger - (631) 863-2460 http://www.chiefchimney.com/ They did a great job for us - very thorough. They will do a real cleaning, not half-a$$ed. It runs about $200 and they won't give you a BS story about needing something else unless you really do. I did a fair bit of research and found that a serious cleanings done right will cost you about $200 and that the cheap ones are just a quick brush of the reachable areas, not a full cleaning.
