For Moms that swaddle(d) their babies..

...When did you stop swaddling your baby?

...is there an approximate "cut-off date" for when you should stop swaddling?

TIA.

I stopped when Emma was about 3 months old. She grew out of the miracle blanket (she is really long) - and kicked her little legs out of anything I tried to wrap her in.

Thanks, Dh is such a worrywart...He doesn't think we should swaddle her anymore (but will he get up in the middle of the night when she does???-NO!).
He said today "what if she has a itch on her face & she can't scratch it b/c her arms are swaddled?"Chat Icon
...but it made me think.Chat Icon

At our 6 month appointment our ped. said it was fine to keep swaddling her if that is how she slept well. Little by little she would break her hands free in the middle of the night but stay asleep that's how we knew we could stop. We use a sleep sack now.

We stopped at about 6.5 months. The Dr said it would have been fine to keep swaddling but I wanted to try stopping to see how he would adjust......luckily he adjusted fine and he now uses a sleep sack.

I stopped swaddling at around 4 months. I think the transition is generally a lot easier than you would think. I was petrified!! But she started kicking out of the swaddle and after a while it was like, what's the point. So she did great and we now use a sleep sack.

LOL, If my one year old had an itch on her nose she'd likely poke herself in the eye before being able to actually scratch the spot that itches.

The appropriate cut-off date is exactly when your child no longer wants to be in the swaddle. For me that (very clear) night came at 4.5 months.

Re: For Moms that swaddle(d) their babies..

My daughter LOVES, and I mean LOVES the swaddle...we have been trying to wean her for awhile now because of the imaginary "cut-off" date...

She is 7 1/2 months and she gets swaddled one arm out every night because her right arm is a HUGE wake-me-up...Bella apparently loves to be wrapped like a mummy and doesn't really move in her crib...

She is growing out of it though and when she wants to, she can easily get herself out...
I have finally gotten over it and will let her tell me when she is done...my doc said it's totally fine...most kids usually stop around 3 1/2-4 months, but I am a testament that it may last longerChat Icon

we stopped at about a few weeks old since my DD loves to sleep with her arms above her head. It's too cute and comfortable for her! We tried swaddling her with her arms out for her to do this but what is the purpose of swaddling her then? Chat Icon Chat Icon

We never swaddled thier arm in, since they mad eit very clear in the NICU, they wanted no part of having thier arms tucked in. We stopped using the swaddle me when they were kicking out of it for a few nights in a row, this was probably at 5 - 6 months.

I still swaddle jacob and he is the same age as alex. He is an arm flailer so i have no choice really. He does manage to kick his legs out of the miracle blanket at night so now i just leave his legs out and make the arms tight. I read in a book that babies this young do not get "itches"... b/c even if they did they dont have arm/hand coordination to actually scratch it. Interesting....Chat Icon I say if she still wants it, do it....
