To use contrasting cabinet colors....?
Hmmm...I love the look of the contrasting cabinet/island colors. We are remodeling the kitchen, adding an island. I'm nervous it will get old fast
Would you do this for a kitchen (which obviously can't be changed easily).
We are doing light (whitish) cabinets, so if we did a wood island, I'm thinking it could be painted later if we ever got sick of it?

I did this with my kitchen. Take a look in my house album for pics. IMO although it is a trend, the style of cabinets I picked were timeless.

I love that look!! If you get sick of the island down the road, you can always have it refaced. I say go for it!!

Our cabinets are actually being installed as I type. We chose all maple cabinets with a painted finish—the back wall will be finished white and the opposing wall's peninsula will be finished black, with white cabinets on top. Whoever I tell this to usually scrunches up their face like I'm crazy, but I think it will be awesome and I love using contrasting colors!

It looks great! That is what I want too! The more I think about it, I think as long as the rest is painted, we could have it matched later

Our wall cabinets are all a vanilla glaze, our island is a cognac glaze. I love the look.
I think I'm going to get tired of the SS appliances before I get tired of the contrasting cabinet colors.

I like it but only in a big kitchen - I think it still looks nice in a small kitchen but I think it looks best when you have a really large kitchen and island...
It might be "trendy" but so are a lot of things like granite, stainless steel appliances, certain looks in backsplashes...

I like the look but it's too trendy for me. Kitchen renovations are expensive and I wouldn't do something that won't age well.

I would completely go for it. It might be "trendy" or it might not. It could become the new "traditional" for this generation. You never know. And like you said, you could always paint it to match your other cabinets.

Re: To use contrasting cabinet colors....?
this is a hot trend right now.... it may or may not date your renovation- you just don't know...
I know many people, though, who do this- and I like the look a lot. You can always paint or replace the island if you get sick of it. But keep in mind with painting the island to match the other cabinetry- it will be close but never an exact match.
I also like the way it looks with contrasting granite.
